To add some more mid-to-late game interest and more use for combat, how about some set pieces near the edges of the map where an always-hostile mob is found guarding some valuable resource? This might be a creature tough enough that you will lose dupes to it, and you'll need a bunch of dupes in armor to take it out - even if you soften it up in advance by filling the area with a gas or liquid the creature doesn't like.

Yeah in late game you usually just deplete resources without having a goal at the moment. bosses are really nice. also having hostile mobs can add pressure to the already hard to maintain survival. maybe these new resources can be used to get better and improved machines?
