Colorblind-Friendly Gas Overlay?

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

My husband and I have been playing and enjoying ONI for a little while now, and something he said recently prompted me to create an account and post this suggestion/request.

My husband is colorblind, and finds it difficult to differentiate between the atmosphere types by sight alone, especially when they're at low densities and therefore less opaque. He has the most trouble with hydrogen and chlorine, as his colorblindness is red/green-oriented, but everything is a little difficult to see in low concentrations. Using the Oxygen Overlay is somewhat helpful, but I would like to suggest that there be an additional overlay, or modify that one with filter-by-type buttons, to show all of the gasses. The fact that the existing overlays dim out the background and highlight the atmosphere/power/etc in question makes it really easy to see everything, because it has a much higher contrast than the non-overlay view of the game. Something similar to the Oxygen Overlay, but color-coded for the different gasses, rather than just oxygen density, would be a benefit to everyone, but especially colorblind people.

Also, on an unrelated note, we'd like to give props to Klei for designing (whether intentional or not) a game that can be controlled 99% with the mouse. We have a newborn, so finding games we can play one-handed while we hold the baby has been an interesting challenge. Kudos!

i had put another post about a similar issue and urged them to change the gasses to be more easily identifiable because of people who are colourblind but also because of people with poorer eyesight.

I do not have issues with my eyesight but like you said, when gasses are less dense it is really difficult to see, what it is, I miss how they all used to be. I would love it if they did do more to help with this!
