With nitrogen being over 3/4 of atmosphere, would it totally bork the game mechanics to have it present?

Without it, things like fire would need increasingly complex workarounds for the missing dampening effect.

There is a post about using it for refrigeration, but other than that, no mention.

This is not a pursuit of realism driven request, rather an introduction of a balancing factor for certain effects, allowing complex actions like fire to function without additional abstract or arbitrary mechanics that may be less intuitive.

The lother problem is, we humans breath it in, dupes do not, they can also live on pure oxygen we would die if we did for that long.

To some extent, this goes back to more than one gas being present in the same space that a dupe draws breath from.

If gases were more of a mix where not controlled, pure oxygen in public areas would not occur naturally.

Also, since we do not alter a significant portion of the nitrogen we breathe, it is more or less a zero sum.

The same could be true for dupes, and it would make no appreciable difference, with the notable exceptions of things like hypoxia and hyperoxia being able to be added.

This would be really costly to implement probably (now each cell has only single liquid be it gas or liquid (same thing from somulation point of view). Changing this to some list of liquids and for each current interaction having to iterate all of them etc... All of this without any significant benefit for players. And as for workarounds, games are full of compromissis and workarounds simply because PC's are still far from simulating real world in real time.

We can always just pretend it is in the game, but since it is an element we do no deal with we cannot see it *Makes a magical wooing noise*

Haha

We could be holding paper cutouts of dupes, pretending they can move and eat, but this game offers a better option.

Nitrogen has many roles in the world this game takes inspiration from, beyond anaerobic respiration.

The fertilizer in the game could be readily represented as a form of nitrogen, and liquid nitrogen has cryogenic potential.
