Over in the Riddit tlztlz suggested a planning tool. To quote: This awesome game needs a planning tool. I suggested a way to implement it that I wanted to share here where the developers might see it.

 

In the "Prioritize" menu have a "Plan" selection. This would set a priority zero for the build tasks selected. P0 tasks would never be queued to Dupes. P0 tasks would only be visible when the Prioritize menu was selected. this would let you plan out an entire base and every building or tile type would be instantly available to the planning mode without having to program in separate graphics for each fiddly little thing. To move something you have in planning to be built, all you have to do is re-prioritize it off of zero. You might want to enable placement of un-researched buildings or materiel types not in inventory, but that start to get a little more complicated fast. Just being able to place stuff without building it would be very helpful.

I think it would be achievable to do it with the normal objects but have them use 0 material, just be their outlines, I currently use sandstone to plan a massive section of my base after obtaining enough sandstone for only one piece the game doesnt stop you building tonnes of walls that way it just reserves the stuff everytime it becomes available. So it is doable in a roundabout way, If they just make it you can have it with "No Material" and later you can select a material to fill it in with or just build over it.
