Ninaiso
Long time no post! I do hope this is in the right place. I apologise if not. I am a complete noob when it comes to networking for sure. I was wanting to know if through LAN or some other means I would be able to play with my sweetheart offline? I live in a very remote location so my internet is actually all tethered from my phone. My sweetheart visits often and we want to play together when he's here but my phone can barley connect me to the game, let alone connect both of us. It's very laggy and connection drops frequently. So I was wondering how to set up maybe a LAN that can be used offline? Or something else if it's not a LAN I use? I have no idea how any of that works, so I'd have to be told what to buy and how to set it up and everything, very sorry about that but I would very much appreciate it! Thank you for your time. Yuuko
I'm pretty sure the option for Local Only does exactly this. This option is in the server creation page where it has Public / Friends Only / Local Only / Steam Group. Enabling something on our computers? Or is it just local only and boom whatever offline server I make can be clicked by him? Yuuko
You should all be connected to the same router. If you're already hooked up to a router for internet then you're set, just use "local" and everyone should see the game. In the Local setting it shouldn't ping out to the servers so you should have a much better experience. I wanted to not do that and play offline with him because of how terrible my phone internet is. So I need a router? Do I need a specific kind? Do they come with the Ethernet (I think that's what they are called??) cables for us to hook our laptops into it? Again I apologise for being a bit network dumb, I'm pretty clueless about this. Yuuko
If you get any cheap router it should have 4 lan ports for cables to plug computers in, and wireless for any number of additional computers. You wouldn't need any internet on this, just connect everyone to the same router. alainmcd
@Ninaiso, you can create a wireless ad hoc network between your two laptops without the need for any other piece of hardware, as long as they both have wireless capability. Google "ad hoc wifi" for instructions on how to set it up (this is the first result I got, Windows 7, other Windows versions might be slightly different). In the most basic fashion, none of the computers is connected to the internet, so you can simply create an offline world: launch the game, press Play, then press Play Offline, and create your world normally; you'll receive a warning that the world will only be available in offline mode. You won't be able to use or receive skins, but the world will be available at all times, regardless of whether you have access to the internet or not. Alternatively, you can have either one of the PC's tethering to your phone and sharing the connection with the other one, or having both PC's tethering. Start the game, log in normally and create a world, make sure you set it to "Local Only". This allows you to use and receive skins, but both machines will require to be connected to the internet.
