Oxygen generation and Plants

So, there are several varieties of plants. Some Aesthetic and others Functional.

One thing they have common is that neither convert a small amount of Carbon Dioxide into Oxygen. While understand Oxygen Not Included is set on an unfamiliar world, deep underground, it can be quite tedious and deadly, where during the mid to late gameplay, everything stagnates due to the need to find more algae or mine slime and turn into algae. (Which creates more problems like heat and contaminated oxygen as well as needing power to run the distillers, etc.)

I believed it would be good to improve this by allowing plants to produce a small amount of oxygen through the conversion of carbon dioxide. Let me know what you guys think.

Maybe we can have special plants that produce a little bit of oxygen as well as filter some of the co2 and contaminated oxygen out of the air. The plants would have 2 stages of growth, stage 1: co2 and other gases are being consumed; stage 2: plants produce pure oxygen but do not consume any more gases during this time. Once a plant has matured it needs some time to reset, after that, the cycle begins again. The plants would be sensitive to very toxic gases like chlorine and hydrogen and while these gases are present they would not function (this would make managing the plants harder, cause if you want free oxygen you have to keep your base free of these gases). The plants would not be sensitive to heat less then 50 degrees c, however would instantly die (and drop its seed) when exposed to any type of gas colder than 10 degrees c. On the other hand once the plant is exposed to heat higher than 50 c* it would reverse its effects turning oxygen into contaminated oxygen instead.

Why would you set up "stages" like this instead of just how plants actually work, if you were already committed to them taking in CO2 and putting out O2?

Because these plants have been living underground on an alien planet and have adapted to the surrounding environment doing anything it requires to survive. I dunno i just thought it would be cool to see them in different stages, like when its actually breathing, it would have the motion of a human, and when its matured it would look old and dried out.

Oh but the part that was weird about it was that they WOULDN'T be breathing if you did it in stages like that. The stages would actually imply that they have a giant O2 pouch somewhere that they're just filling up and filling up and filling up during stage 1, or something like that.

Breathing with the cartoonish motion of a human would imply that they constantly take in CO2 and constantly output O2. Hence the in/out cycle of the breathing animation (plants of course don't have diaphragms but that part is just cute aesthetics obviously)

Thats actually a cool concept. They would have o2 pouches on them and when they breath in the pouches turn brown or yellow (as the color of the contaminated oxygen) and then slowly turn blue, after which the plant exhales.

In reality, plants only photosynthesize during the day, and generally still respire during the night (gross oversimplification).  If we want plants to convert co2 into o2, a good balance might be that they respire at night (o2 --> co2), but during the day they require light and will convert co2 to o2

After all this game is fantasy - I think that plants are simplified here for game reasons - if we want it realistic, they also need to be watered and produce organic waste when harvested or died. If we stay in fantasy world, we can also imagine plants that consume chlorine gas to produce light. Or whatever.
