Blocking it off is annoying and would be much easier to just select which water pools can be used by dupes. Pumping a smaller pool near food or centralized in your base helps cut down walk times but locking it down is the only way to keep them back. Once I can I cut off the main water supply and pipe it out. Keeps projectile vomit out that way.
