I don't think Walani should be building anything but Surfboards for transportation

Recommended Posts

Aside from a couple Quacken kills, I can't see the point of building any other vessels for Walani besides the 'board. Every time I've attempted to do so, I lost that game before the end of the first Dry Season. The very first time I decided to ditch boats altogether was also the only time I've made it past day 100 in Shipwrecked.

That speed boost you get from wave riding is insane. With it you can ride swells across the entire map, even through fog, as early as day 1 - though usually I'd wait until day 2 or 3. Not only that, but you never have to worry about where you're gonna get Sanity regen from thanks to the infinite amount of waves.

For my base, I found a chill spot in front of a Fishermerm and some Berry Bushes, then I let those keep me fed for the next year while I came back in-between surfing. Each morning (or dusk, or night, or whenever was convenient) I would make some food to take with me, then paddle out of the shallows and check the currents; whichever way they were going was the way I was going.

You can surf basically anywhere but directly against the current, as long as you angle the board correctly. This means you're going between shallows quickly if you're just crossing over to an island, and you can make cross-map treks with the current and your map's fog. Even the weather isn't an issue, as riding big waves is exactly the same as little waves to Walani, in fact it only makes the surfing better.

After the first year, I realized that the only really dangerous things were sea battles against big enemies, so I've opted to simply outrun them with my wave riding. Why fight what you can simply retreat from? I always keep a Life Jacket and a stack of Boards and Seashells in my pockets in case the waves get all gnar'.

I just don't think spending time and resources on building Boats and Boat accessories is worth it for character who can keep as many as 10 Surfboards in her Inventory with only two slots.
