Shadow Puppet type thing [Help required]

Hello all,

I am making a character mod, and I am trying to make it that the charcter can summon 'minions' similar to Maxwell and his shadow puppets. 

I'm just not sure where to begin. In the character mod there is an item that can summon the minions. I've tried to add minion components from other mods with similar features, but with no success. (I attempted to make the minions use the same build/bank as the character to save time but honestly I'd like to have a different one)

So if anyone could help, that'd be great.
