My brother and I have been playing on a LAN setup of DST. When we hit winter or uncover most of the map, he get disconnected.  The ping is 3-4, so there is no lag problems.  I am the host with and OP desktop (cough, cough, $2,200 personally built desktop).  Now, I can only think of two things that could be causing the problem: 1) he doesn't have a graphic card on his desktop so the game just crashes from the lack of memory and 2) I am running windows 10 insider preview which from time to time the graphic's driver complains that it essentially broke and had to restart, which happen instantaneously anyway.

Furthermore, I do get a message saying that Don't Starve Together ran out of memory every now an than, but it doesn't crash my game and I am not sure how it could run out of memory because I have 16GB memory and 2GB of graphic memory.  I normally see this message after I close DST; or minimize DST. (This could be a totally different issue, but I felt like it might be important.)

I'll attach my brothers error logs whenever he finally gets up and lets be get them.  Other than that, I am a vary small developer myself, so ask what you can and I'll provide the details.

Hey @jbeen19, welcome to the forums. Here's the Klei Article that discusses the DST Requirements, in case you haven't seen that yet. Aside from the game crashing for your brother due to not having a dedicated GPU, your logs may also help diagnose what's happening.

Since your game pops up the run out of memory message when you close OR minimize the game, the client_log.txt under Documents\Klei\DoNotStarveTogether should reflect what's happening there. With regards to your brother getting booted from the server, I'd like to ask whether or not you're running any mods on the server. If you are, please list them in your next reply. If your brother is also using any client mods, ask him about it. His client_log.txt would show what's going on in his end when he gets booted. On the other hand you could also post the server_log.txt under the Master and Caves folder of your Dedicated Server folder would reflect what's happening with the server before he gets booted/disconnected. The server_log.txt of the Caves folder may be necessary, if your brother gets disconnected while in the caves.

Make sure the logs you guys get are the fresh ones right after your brother gets disconnected.

To sum up, along side your brother's client_log.txt:

  • Your client_log.txt
  • Your server_log.txt under the Dedicated Server Master and Caves folder
  • Your server mods list (if any)
  • Your brother's active client mods (if any)
  • If possible, also attach a copy of your dxdiag.txt

DXDiag

  • In order to get a DXDiag on WindowsXP or more recent operating systems:
  • Click on your Start button
  • Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard to access the "Run" window
  • On the new window, type in dxdiag.exe and press enter; this will open up the DirectX diagnostic tool
  • Click on the "Save All Information" tab on the diagnostic tool
  • A "Save As..." window will pop up where you can click on save. It will save your hardware information as a document to your desktop (default).
  • Close the diagnostic tool and attach the new document to your forum post or support ticket.

I personally am not knowledgeable enough to pinpoint all the causes of your issues, but I do know the things listed above would help the developers (and any other forum member who has the necessary know-how) to give you workarounds for them.

So for now, cheers.

I have managed to find the problem, but haven't had time to get the fresh logs, which I don't think would do any good since it is not an application problem.

The problem comes down to the "DNS server not responding" which I could not detect earlier because the problem would only last for a split second. Now, we have a "DNS server not responding" for over a minute at times.  I have been running the ipconfig /flushdns in cmd which seems to resolve the problem for know, but I have a feeling the modem will need replace with a higher quality one for sure.

I'll probably making a mod for detecting network issue someday.
