Massive Lag Upon Startup

Recommended Posts

When starting a server it lags for like half a day, even when offline. It's awful wasting half a day and is especially bad if darkness falls or freezing/burning happens or a hound attack. Does anyone know what is causing it? I do have some mods, but they haven't caused me trouble before though.

@Ethlin Firstly, here is some info you might not have encountered before:

I suspect it's due to your system not meeting the game requirements. Secondly, mind listing down those mods you have active?

That lag could be mod related too, wherein one of the mods may not be updated to work as efficiently with the newer version of the game as used to in previous versions. That's just a guess though. It could be multiple other things to be perfectly honest. To fully cross off mods as the cause, try and run a server without mods entirely.

Thirdly, does it always (precisely) take half an in-game day? Then after that, the game runs smoothly? Did I misunderstand the phrasing you used?

I know, that's a lot of questions but hopefully they give you an idea on what to tinker with to possibly fix the issue. Good luck. Cheers.

Well I apparently don't meet the minimum requirements so I know I can't get anything official and that very well could be the problem, it just seems odd it was working fine until the past few days.

You are correct about what I meant the server lags (The little connection icon flashes) for a fair amount of time on start-up. It's not *exactly* a half day, sometimes it's more or less, but that's about average, but the server itself still functions normally during that time (Mobs move about, day passes, etc.)

The mods I use are rather basic, mostly UI type things like health values and such, but anyway here they are...

Wormhole Marks [DST]

Display Food Values

Fire Remaining Burn Time

Health Info

Combined Status

No Thermal Stone Durability (Seriously Klei)

Ice Fling Range Check [DST]

Realistic Placement

Geometric Placement

Large Chest

Extra Equip Slots

Again as I said I never had any issues until recently. My computer was always slow to load the server, but once in game it functioned normally. Now it just has half a days lag (In which server side things till happen) when it starts up.

@Ethlin I think your client_log.txt and log.txt in \Documents\Klei\DoNotStarveTogether\ plus the server_log.txt under the Master folder of the Cluster_# you are using. Assuming you host the server through the client, then Cluster_1 is the server in the first slot of the Host Game menu, Cluster_2 is for the second slot, etc. so get the server_log.txt under the Master folder under the Cluster_# you used and attach them to your next reply. Start up a new server (assuming slot 5 in Host Game screen is unsued, then use that) and let it run for a while until the lag disappears, then disconnect from the server and close the game then get all the log files.

  • client_log.txt and log.txt in \Documents\Klei\DoNotStarveTogether\
  • server_log.txt under the Master folder of the Cluster_# you used (in our test, that would be Cluster_5). Cluster_# folder is also in the same root folder of the client_log.txt and log.txt

Since you did say that it used to be slow, but now it seemed much worse than before, then those log files may shed some light on what part of the server start up process bogs down long enough for you to experience lag of that degree.

I'll do that later tonight, but something very strange you might find interesting until then, I get no lag at all when the internet is unplugged, I don't mean offline mode (It still lags even in offline mode), the actual internet being off (I needed to shut it off for something unrelated and noticed it was gone during that and when I tested it).

Does something need to be sent somewhere and back even in offline mode?

EDIT: Log attached.

server_log.txt

@Ethlin looking at the server_log.txt you seem to forget you are also running Advanced World Generation in that world. That's already a lot of stuff that the game will generate on top of everything else. Also towards the end of the server_log.txt it seems to continuously display the following error:

[00:32:12]: CURL ERROR: Could not resolve host: api.steampowered.com
[00:32:12]: Failed VersionCheckFileDetailsResponse
[00:32:12]: Failure error code received: 0

Truth be told, I don't entirely understand what that CURL ERROR means or why it needs those. What I'll suggest you try is to Check for Steam Client Updates. Open Steam and click the menu tab Steam at the top left which is beside View Friends Games Help. A dropdown list will appear and click Check for Steam Client Updates.

After that, retry the method I mentioned before to see if anything's changed with a new world.

I'm not sure it this applies to dedicated servers created by hosting a multilevel world, but a standalone dedicated server does periodically check if all mods are up to date (and spams a friendly message about it if not). Maybe this curl request is trying to do that.

It might be interesting to compare the two logs - one with the internet enabled (i.e. with the lag), one with turned off (without the lag).
