Don't Starve Winter Bug

I was revisiting Don't Starve and I stumbled upon a random thermometer, chest, and ice box. I am sure it wasn't mine and it is normal don't starve so it isn't someone else's.... Then out of nowhere the thermometer drops and suddenly its winter and i'm freezing! In the chest I found a Breezy coat, winter hat, and some basic grass, logs and sticks. I was only 3 days in so it is very unexpected. My only mods are the display map one, and a display food values mod. I am very creeped out and confused over the strange encounter. If someone could help it would be greatly appreciated. I do understand the regular Don't Starve is a little outdated in that there are new dlcs and what not so the regular one isn't quite the focus.

This is the Winter Trap.  It is a setpiece which triggers Winter when the ice box is opened.  It's intentional

There's a summer version too and you find it in the desert. If you ever run across either of these burn the chest and try to set the ice box on fire, you'll get the items without setting off the trap.

I just got owned by this, to note, this was not a trap on the icebox for me (icebox was empty) but the trap was on the chest (with inside everything to handle winter, ice staff, winter hat, etc...)
