Flying Machines. That is all.

Recommended Posts

Come on, we've all totally thought about this before. Flying machines! Planes, copters, hot air balloons! Any of these things will work! Maybe in shipwrecked, base game, future dlc?

There's no question that it'd be an awesome addition to the game, the real question is how do we integrate them in a way that isn't overpowered and fits well with the feel of the game.

Here's my proposition for how these things will work. The simplest way is that when we approach and use them, the map opens up, and depending on how much fuel you put into the plane (this can be discussed in further detail later but for simplicity's sake let's say it runs on burnables like most machines) you can click a place on the map that is shown as being within the zone of possible landing places and you hop into your plane, adorn your flying goggles, and you're off!

Now here's the thing. In my head, the planes will have tiers and be very expensive and require their own crafting station perhaps. Their own tab, at the very least, aeronautics. A very simple one can be made of things like bamboo, snakeskin, thatch, etc, and the durability of the plane will go down a lot based on distance travelled, more cargo space, and be much less efficient with fuel than higher tiers using boards, cloth, ropes, pigskins, etc.

It would probably be required that the area you want to travel to is already revealed on the map so it really encourages more exploration and it could also be required for you to preemptively clear a landing zone for it too, maybe when you land, crashing into trees or rocks would do damage to the plane and knock them down.

Thoughts?

I'd rather have them be like boats, but be better at maneuvering/kiting when compared to boats at the expense of less max speed.

I thought about that too but the problem is just redundancy. It doesn't make a ton of sense to make two entirely different kinds of vehicle if they just do the same thing a little different.
