Some beginner's questions

So....i have got shipwrecked, it good even though i never got the pelican or clockworks or water beefalo. I play as Wendy which is quickly overthrowing Wigfrid as my favourite character due to Abigail. Oh the snake killing. I have too much snakeskin!

 

One question though, i am on my second hurricane season (died on the first one due to torch blowing out) and i noticed my health was almost at 0. I realized the hail i was trying to collect was hitting and damaging me.

 

So....any way to go out and not be killed by hail? I have been under my palm leaf hut (which apparently doesn't get destroyed by winds) for almost 2 days. Any help?

 

Also, can someone explain preperation for Flood season?
