Best way of making a DST chararcter?

Familiarize yourself with basic XML coding, such as the use of inst. and local prefabs

 

I actually would not recommend gimp unless you plan on doing advanced artwork editing, otherwise use Paint.net (It's free and significantly easier to use).

 

It does take time to make a good character, and as far as creating a new and creative character, it's up to you. Even if you don't plan on publishing, a good way to start is to create yourself in-game.
