Mr.Mulk
Here's some resources for you to use:Artwork Instruction: (I won't lie it could be better)http://forums.kleientertainment.com/topic/28703-a-no-talent-hacks-guide-to-art/ Custom Sound Mod: (This will really set your character apart)http://forums.kleientertainment.com/topic/27803-tutorial-adding-custom-sound-to-your-custom-character/ Custom Items: (Hat and then Handslot Equipable)http://forums.kleientertainment.com/files/file/373-hat-example/http://forums.kleientertainment.com/topic/29427-tutorial-creating-a-handslot-equippable-item-from-scratch/ Familiarize yourself with basic XML coding, such as the use of inst. and local prefabs I actually would not recommend gimp unless you plan on doing advanced artwork editing, otherwise use Paint.net (It's free and significantly easier to use). It does take time to make a good character, and as far as creating a new and creative character, it's up to you. Even if you don't plan on publishing, a good way to start is to create yourself in-game. Hope this all helps!
