DirtyLegThompson
I have around 450 hours in DST, and I rarely play now. It's not because I'm bored, or because of trolls, even. It's because of the map gen. I know for a fact that if I want a medium-large sized base, I'm going to need anywhere from 10-25 gears. However, half of the time I play, it seems that clockworks aren't even being spawned. I mean, I uncover the entire world, and the clockworks are just NOT on the map. This is the same with walrus camps and the pig king, albeit the PK is there 70% of the time. But I don't like playing for 2 hours just to come to find that the world wasn't generated properly. Which brings me to what I'd like to suggest. The process for map generation seems to not have priorities other than having one of each biome. However, this is an obviously flawed method, as it leaves it up to chance whether or not a world is really playable. I refuse to play a long lasting world without the proper tools and resources, such as walrus tusks and gears. It just isn't the same game. And this is why I rarely play now. I would suggest your team to add some coding into the map gen process to improve this, like maybe place all of the set pieces first, then place the resources afterwards. And all too many times I'll find empty clockwork/maxwell biomes, and it just infuriates me. Like I should have a resource there! But instead, there wasn't room for the clockworks and the like. And I'm officially done playing this game until this issue has been resolved... LunaticEdit
I also noticed when selecting a "medium" map that after 6 days, two of us had yet to map out the entire map. The world is a LOT larger than the 'large' world I created previously. I'm getting the impression that if you do anything other than default, the game simply freaks out when creating a map Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/57080-issues-with-the-map-generation-process/#findComment-663852 Share on other sites
DirtyLegThompson
Good thing gears are found in tumbleweeds and graves so they're an infinite resource, right?I would agree, if it weren't for the incredibly low rate that they are dropped by the both of them. We're talking about needing gears for a large base, with at least 4 flingers and 3 fridges, and then multiplying that base by 3, since its DST and most players play in groups of 2-4. And like I said, all too often the map generates <10 or none at all, so you're forced to dig through the random drop opportunities for them, effectively wasting all too much time, and that is possibly an actual waste of your time, as sometimes you just don't get enough gears and end up having to condense your base because the map gen decided how big your base is going to be. I usually need 2 fridges and 3 flingos. I've never had problems with gears in my worlds. In fact, I've got 13 on one of them and nothing to do with them. DirtyLegThompson
13 gears is meh, I tend to make 3-5 fridges and 4 flings by the time summer hits, and then I'm going to want 2 more for my insulated pack, and even more if I decide to expand my base further. And this is me talking about public servers, where several other players (sometimes 20+ players) Have a dire need for gears.
