The Anarchist Vegan Speedrun

Recommended Posts

Preface: I enjoy Don't Starve immensely, but after putting in about 300 hours, surviving has become too easy. To give myself a challenge, I created this speedrun. If I've done my job correctly, then it will give even the most hardened veterans a run for their money.

Questions

What's up with the title?
I chose to play vegan runs because restricting food was a good starting point to increase the difficulty. Anarchist refers to the chaos of frequently having hostile mobs on the screen

Why did you choose these frequencies?
Killer bees, tallbirds, hound mounds, and merms are on more because it creates a nice balance of resource-gathering and running for your life. Spiders and tentacles are on less because they are easy to avoid and give valuable drops. Treeguards are on less because they're easy to kite and easy to pacify. MacTusk is off because he has overpowered drops and tends to die easily in the environment. Lureplants are off because they're silly

Why is the secondary objective to build a nightmare amulet?
It is a deceptively costly item that has little value in a time-constrained setting and thus can act as a trophy

Any tips?

If you're struggling to find food, check out my vegan guide on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/dontstarve/comments/3c9b1i/a_detailed_guide_to_fruits_vegetables_and_vegan/

Aside from that, I will leave you to your own devices, though I'd be happy to give advice if you've tried the challenge and find that you need a push in the right direction.

Any mods?
I decided to stay true to the original game and not use any mods. But, with that said, the Minimap mod is nice to play with as it allows you to avoid running into merms and killer bees at night without having to check the map every few steps, giving the game a more natural flow. The same applies to the Always On Status, although I'd turn off temperature as that is meant to be a critical unknown

You're a jerk, this is too hard
I wanted to make a challenge that would leave even the best players struggling to survive. If, however, you're looking for something slightly less Rambo-esque, I encourage you to tone down the settings until you find a level that you find enjoyable. For instance, you may want to put seasons on short instead of very short, play as a different character, put hounds and giants on more instead of lots, and play vegetarian instead of vegan.

Thanks for stopping by, and good luck!

A bit of a roll-the-dice world setting it seems from your description, but ok.

At least for the primary objective, it's surprisingly consistent. The two biggest factors are learning how to avoid hostile mobs' radii of attack, and quickly identifying and seeking out the most helpful biomes.

I am extremely insulted

Why's that?

At least for the primary objective, it's surprisingly consistent. The two biggest factors are learning how to avoid hostile mobs' radii of attack, and quickly identifying and seeking out the most helpful biomes.

Why's that?

Because I'm an Ancom (Anarcho Communist).
