In public Wilderness servers, a lot of new players struggle finding essential nonrenewable resources or adapting to harsh weather conditions if there are any.

For this, I suggest the implementation of a new feature called: the ethereal chest.

When a new player joins, they will be presented with a special _private_ chest containing a few basic items to start with. This is not meant to make the game easier, so please keep reading.

The contents of this chest would depend on the current season:

If it's Autumn or Spring, the chest would hold: 3 flint.

If it's Winter, the chest would hold: 3 flint, winter hat and the materials for a single campfire.

If it's Summer, the chest would hold: 3 flint, 1 ice cube.

The item choices are reasonable:

1. Flint is an item that is essential to doing anything in the game. In large servers, finding flint is nearly impossible. 3 flint is just enough so that the player can mine rocks for more flint and make an axe for woodcutting.

2. New players starting in Winter will barely make it if they don't have any winter gear. That said, a Winter Cap would be nice. Materials for a campfire are also required in case the player spawns in an unfortunate spot without any trees.

3. Summer is really brutal, so starting players would struggle with anything. At least giving them an ice cube to keep them cool for the first few days would suffice.

Since the chest is private, only the new player would be able to retrieve its contents. The ethereal chest will disappear after a few minutes, or immediately if it's emptied.

Just died a few times, logging into barren winter wilderness servers.

Ran around for a bit until I froze to death shortly after.

Picked Willow, survived a bit longer, but there were no flint anywhere.

Asked if anyone was playing together, no one replied.

So yeah, a few aids to help you out if you happen to log into winter.

These are not meant to be seasons you can survive in starting out. The point is to use easy autumn to prepare for the rest of the seasons. The server states what day and what season it is before you even join. It's your choice to join in the middle of winter knowing you don't have any of the items needed to survive. There are more advanced players that can make it but if you're not one of those join a server in autumn. Did you know you can set a filter to only show you servers that are in autumn?

As for you wanting flint to be available even in autumn or spring, sometimes I don't find flint when I start a game until two biomes away. And if you're joining a server that's on its 100th day, no flint is a risk you take. What if the other players have already mined the entire rocky biome? Should there be a chest with extra flint when you get there? This is a multiplayer game. There shouldn't be handicaps to make up for a lack of interaction. If you join on day 100 and the other players don't want to share with a newcomer, move on to a different server. Choose one where you can actually contribute.

And this is why players want the option to prevent people from joining their servers in the middle of winter. You knew it was the middle of winter. What did you expect to happen? And you continually chose winter servers? Then you chose Willow so you could burn down half the forest just for a bit of heat and to ultimately meet the same fate? What's so hard about joining a server in autumn? Is having to contribute that scary?

If someone joins my server mid winter/summer, I would ignore them too. It's really not worth the time and effort telling you that you need to survive on your own for a few days before coming to the base. I already know you're most likely to die on the first night and then I'll have to kick you before you start haunting ****. Especially if you're bitter about not being allowed to instantly come to base.

Have to agree with this. I know exactly how many people are on a server and what season it's in before joining. I fully understand the consequences of joining one in the middle of winter or the day before.

Dev coddling is not the solution to surviving.

Having to contribute? Get the **** off your high horse.

This was a wilderness server, which there aren't many of as is. I guess I should join one of the laggy ones, which are on day 1. Oh how many is on day 1? No one...? Oh...

But yeah, it's great that it's the player's fault for joining the wrong vanilla server. I can see how the game will benefit from this.

In a few months, no vanilla servers will exist. All the problems will have been fixed, or attempted fixed, by mods. Is this acceptable? No not really.

It's pretty clear that this game was designed to be played by friends on password protected servers.
