Character Sprite Conversion

Heyo modders, I need a bit of help.

 

I'm working on a character mod but need help getting a certain character's sprites, Wes' to be exact. I need to use him as a template, but I'm not sure how to find or export his sprites. I'm not asking for the sprites, but for the learning experience on how I might find what I need. 

 

Where could I find the files and what type of files format are they?

 

What tools might I need? I already have the tools on Steam, but I could be missing something.

 

If there's already a post that answers my questions, feel free to post a link there. Again I'm just trying to learn, but don't be afraid to point me in the right direction. Thanks everyone<3
