[Tutorial] How to play both; DST Vanilla and DST RoG worlds!

Recommended Posts

Differences collide, my friends! I'm surprised I only thought of this myself now. And the biggest surprise of all; it WORKS! So, before I start my tutorial, I must mention to you that you must keep your RoG and Vanilla DST worlds separate. I do not know what will happen if you don't do this, but it's best to be safe than sorry. I do not know how dedicated servers would function here, since I've never tried hosting one myself.

Warning!

If you do not save your world files separately, they will intervene with each other and your worlds may be replaced. Say if you had a DST RoG world saved and when you altered to DST Vanilla, you would have no saved worlds shown there, however, if you were to then make a new world in the same save file location while running Vanilla, then the next time you run RoG, your RoG world would be completely abolished and replaced with the Vanilla world in the same save file and I think the same issue is vice versa, so make sure you save the world files and keep them separate, else I'd recommend may be keeping first two world save slots for Vanilla and the last three for RoG, it would then depend on the amount of worlds you wanna host for each kind. In the spoiler below, I've made example worlds of how I've spaced them out without making copies of DST world files:

This is how you could set out your world save files if you do not wish to save DST RoG and DST Vanilla worlds separately (don't mind my worlds being a little messy. I just don't have the time and patience to make clear examples by altering between RoG and Vanilla, running the game, changing the worlds afterwards to my actual hundreds of days worlds etc.):

DST RoG worlds' save files:

Though after activating RoG in DST, making worlds there, then deactivating RoG and making worlds on Vanilla, then afterwards activating  RoG again, your worlds will look like this (They will still be separate, but will both be shown in DST RoG save files. The RoG ones won't be shown if you deactivate RoG, which is why you should not make new worlds in save files you've made RoG worlds already, else they'll just be replaced with the Vanilla worlds):

How to save two DST files:

Step 1:

First off, you must go to your "Klei" folder and find "DontStarveTogether" folder, where all your worlds and DST files are located (For example, for Windows, it is usually located in "My Computer/Local Disk/My Documents/Klei". I'm making this tutorial on my Windows XP desktop, so it is a bit different than what is on my Windows 7 laptop.):

Step 2:

I'd recommend making a folder, which, for example you could call "Don't Starve Together World Files". In this folder, then make two more folders, one called "Don't Starve Together Vanilla World Files" and the other "Don't Starve Together RoG World Files". Now, remember, if you've upgraded to RoG already, save your copy into the RoG world file folder, but if you haven't, put the copy in the Vanilla world file folder:

Okay, so, this spoiler showed you how to be safer with the world files. The next spoiler will show you what to do next in order to alter between RoG and Vanilla DST.

How to alter between DST Vanilla and DST RoG:

Step 3:

Go to your Steam library. If you haven't upgraded to RoG already, here's a link showing how to upgrade your DST Vanilla to DST RoG. If you have, however upgraded to DST RoG and want to play some Vanilla worlds, follow the same steps as the DST RoG upgrade tutorial, however, this time, when going to "Betas" in "Properties" of your DST game, select "NONE - Opt out of all beta programs" (Yes, I only have a few games on my steam account right now, but whatever!):

Step 4:

Then, basically run the game and your DST RoG will be "downgraded" to DST Vanilla:

So, if you ever want to alter between the two, just basically follow the steps through 1 to 4. Now you don't have to think for ages whether you want to upgrade to DST RoG yet or not; just alter between them whenever you feel like it.

Not sure whether this has been done by other people already, however, it is best if a tutorial is put in case anyone wants to find out how to go back and forth between DST RoG and DST Vanilla. Hope this helps :-)

I love RoG and I can't even think in return to vanilla but some friends don't like RoG because is more hard, when they started the RoG beta they said me: "how can i disable RoG"

Thanks, now I can help them to disable RoG, however they couldn't play anymore with me right?, this is quite useful and this should be in the developers post

Again, if you want to re-enable RoG, just follow the steps which developers put up to upgrade again to it!

Unless you downgrade yourself as well, you won't be able to play with them. You and them can both upgrade again anytime anyway, so it shouldn't be a problem.
