What parameters accounts to lag and latency for DST?

Recommended Posts

I've done a bit of research on this with little to no definite results. I just simply want to know if I am understanding the situation perfectly. Listed below are my questions:

  •
  • Is lag affected by the geographical distance of the player and host's PCs? If yes, by how much(i.e. It accounts for 90% of overall lag)?
  • Does the host and/or player PC specs have any effect on latency or lag experienced between player and host?
  • Is there a thread/topic within the DST BETA forums about the specifics on hosting servers and how it's technically done in the background? (I've searched, and came up empty.)
  • Correct me if I'm wrong:

                  • Host - DST user that creates the server.
                    • Player - other DST users that join that server.
                    • Latency - is for how long an input from a player reaches the host/server.
                    • Ping - is a test for latency between player and host/server.
                    • Lag - is the actual delay experienced by user that is caused by latency and all other
aspects of the network between them.

All my knowledge about these things are google-based and I'm almost sure most people are the same, that would be looking for answers to these very same questions pertaining to DST. So if you do have knowledge to share, please bear that in mind.

Server Performance Megathread/Log - Post Stats and server performance !

I literally just posted a thread on the main page to collate data so we are better able to determine what causes this lag.

Asking these questions is smart but currently no-one knows the answer because of the beta nature of the game plus a lack of data.

Therefore feel free to continue to my thread with the data points requested so we can better answer your question.

Guess we've thought almost the same thing at exactly the same time.

You've got this handled than I ever would have though. Here I was only asking questions without doing anything about it like you. I'll link your thread into OP. See you there kukela.

Me and my good friend Rezecib talked about this before, rubberbanding and other latency problems are not caused just by distance, etc. It's certainly a factor, but an actual big problem is if the server can handle running the DST server.

Noted, thank you for the sharing info on what you guys found.
