New Player Seeking Answers

Hello Everyone,

My name is Michael and I am fairly new to Don't Starve and have several questions I am hoping you all can help me with. Please keep your responses as "spoiler free" as possible as I don't want anyone to "hold my hand' through the experience Thank you ^_^

1. I was wondering if there were any other uses for gold other than research and building your robot?

2. It would seem like after a few days (in game) a pack of these vicious looking wolves will start hunting me at night and they ALWAYS kill me. I was wondering if there is a way I can set traps for hostile mobs or what I can do to survive the encounter. As you all know I cannot run to far away from my fire so they usually finish me off real quick and I have no chance.

3. Do resources re-spawn in Don't Starve? Such as boulders, mobs...well is there anything that doesn't re-spawn that I should keep in mind and be aware of?

4. Are there any forms of protection such as walls, barricades traps and so on?

5. How do I fish? I noticed I can make a "Fishing Rod' but I cannot seem to cast it in the water around me.

6. Does planting seeds in plots give random crop output? or is there a way to make a certain crop grow?

7.When I replant things like the "Berry Bushes" and "Grass" it doesn't seem like they are growing back, How do I make them regrow the resource?

8. Lastly I was wondering if there is a Official Guide? If not I was wondering if someone could point me in the direction of a good fan-made guide. I am not looking for cheats or the most efficient way of playing day to day but more on what the items,mobs etc do in the game, What the game has to offer and so on.

Gold has a very important use later on that you will find out about ~Day 20 *guessing*

There are items you can research that can help you perform better; also kiting (hit and run) helps alot

Mobs yes, boulders flint trees bushes etc no

4. Are there any forms of protection such as walls, barricades traps and so on?

Yes some but not many as of now; you will find them via researching

You will need to find a fishing pond; they're typically in a dangerous biome.

6. Does planting seeds in plots give random crop output? or is there a way to make a certain crop grow?

Afaik its random with different rarities (I haven't had time to play the latest patch)

Think about real life farming.

There are fan mad guides or how to's etc. Excess (forum mod) excels here. There is also a Don't Starve wiki

Yes thank you for keeping it free of spoilers though it is a little hard to follow, but that is the way of it when you don't want spoilers lol could you please tell me how I can find the guides by Excess that you mentioned? I am not really sure how to find his profile or his posts. Thank you ^_^

They're useful to make "Better" items.

There are a few items in the game that really help you deal with damage as well as dishing it out.

Most resources in Don't Starve are renewable in some form. Not exactly "re-spawning", but you can obtain them again by some methods.

Some that aren't are boulders, flint, etc(rocks dont grow back!). Trees are renewable, etc.(They dont grow back, but you can plant them)

Not as such, but there are ways to "protect" yourself using the environment and nearby creatures if you dont have the equipment yourself.

Fishing ponds, mostly found close to swamps.

Random.

You will need to find something to regrow any Berry Bushes or Grass you wish to replant.

Excess is a programmer and has some interesting tools but there are a few guides I've seen somewhere in the general discussion. My main question is what are you trying to obtain from the guides without being spoiled?

Here is a Ask Pros thread though it's bound to have spoiler if you read through it.

You can also try using the search toolbar to see if you can find anything of interest.

Ok I lied, the guide on controls has 1 small "spoiler" if you want to be nitpicky XD But honestly it's in the trailer and logical so I guess it doesn't truly count.

Can't find the guides, I'm pretty sure I've seen one before though. Sorry :3 There have been a few threads asking about how to improve their survivability if they're struggling if you want to try and find one of those.

An easy way to deal with wolves is to lay a bunch on meat items on the ground, such as morsels. They will greedily run and chomp those down allowing you to get some free hits, and any other wolves will be too busy eating to aid the one you are currently killing.
