RoG generates worlds differently?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys!

Lately I've been playing a lot of Don't Starve, and figured I would buy the Reign of Giants DLC since it looked like really cool with all the added features and (somewhat) more difficulty. I installed it a few hours ago and began testing and noticed a thing that caught me by surprise.

In vanilla, most of my maps were like a huge, unique island with sometimes having a piece of land branched off the world accessible via bridge or a worm hole. But in RoG it seems that there's a ton of of these "branched off" islands. All of my maps seemed like a weird distribution of a main island with a lot of land bodies all around it, which is a bit weird since in vanilla none of my maps were like it.I spawned 4 different characters and went scouting with them, but the results were incredibly similar.

It also seems that RoG likes to create these huge ass biomes (like, 1 branch of the map is a whole Swamp, another one is a huge Savanna, etc.), and I've encountered a lot of mosaic biomes when in vanilla felt like a somewhat rare one.

I tested using the Loop and Branch options when generating the world (the attempts described above were with the default preset), and while I can get it somewhat more preferable it still looks weird and totally different than how vanilla worlds were generated.

I also find it really hard to find the Pig King, but I might have overlooked it a bit.

Is this a conscious change implemented on the game? Am I just having terrible, terrible luck with my maps? Is there a way to change the world generation method to a more "vanilla-like" way?

I always thought the worlds in Vanilla and RoG always spawned nearly the same for me, the main difference being the size. Sometimes I'd get the loop, sometimes the branch type, sometimes a mixture of both. Still seems to happen like that.

The one thing I've noticed is that if you spawn with a loop map, the next few maps will also be loop. So it spawns worlds in bunches in a way. 5 or so loop worlds in a row, then 5 of the branch in a row.... etc.

Since I got used to the new mechanics in RoG, I set the world to huge and just roll with it.

Oh, Look for the Pig King in the new Autumn biome. Usually near to the Glommer Statue and a cave entrance.

Think of RoG as a new game. Enjoy the new biome generation and you'll soon think of it as the norm!
