Whether you fight something directly or antagonise another creature to do your bidding, it's somewhat the same as 'combat'.

 

However, we are talking about the significance of combat - both in interest, in time investment, in difficulty, and in diversity - as a whole rather than narrowing it down. So, whilst people might have a cornicopia of methods for dealing with hostilities, it's about a number of factors and how much they play on the player throughout a session of Don't Starve.
