So, I thought it would be cool to implement "Mineshafts." I don't mean mines with coal, gold, iron, etc. I just mean, little caves full of boulders, and maybe a chest, or better than average loot.

First, the mineshafts would be very dangerous, full of spiders, giant spiders, giant rats, goblins, and whatever else pleases you. The loot... again like I said, would be better than average. Maybe at the end there would be a chest, or if you're trying to stray away from games like this, then a Richer Rock or something like that. This rock would contain either gems, or gold nuggets or something along those lines. Of course it's just a suggestion, but I think this would add some MORE entertainment to the already awesome game :)

Now, finally... Why you should take the risk of the cave... (since you can completely live without the extra materials inside the cave) There should be waypoints outside of these caves that revive you if you die. You lose all of your items, and they will stay in the cave, but you'll still be revived. You'll be revived with the same health and hunger you had before you died, so you can't exploit this and drop items outside the cave and run on in there and get free food and hp.

Leave feedback and if you'd like to see this happen or not.

I saw the thread's title and naturally assumed it had something to do with "underground areas", which is one of my bread and butter topics. ;)

I'm liking what you're saying so far... go on. :)

Why a mineshaft? In the past I've suggested a natural crevasse opening serve as an entry into underground caverns. Also, while I wouldn't be against seeing spider nests (and spiders) in the caverns, I'm not sure about the goblins. I mean, if you had license to add whatever you wanted to a game, why not create whatever creature you wanted? I think Klei would be better off creating completely new creatures we've never seen before to populate underground areas. That said, I do like giant rats... damn it.

Hmmm. I'm not completely against or for a treasure chest. I think though that since so much comes from nature that it might make sense to allow players to find more of the other "treasures" you suggested, like gems, gold ore, and maybe other ores you can't find on the surface... like iron ore. I've also heard suggestion that in addition to gemstones there also be crystals (i.e. quartz).

Mmmm, I couldn't agree with this... save points? I think Don't Starve is about taking risks. You enter the caverns knowing to some degree what to expect, a lack of food sources (other than, say, muchrooms and cave fish) and a serious lack of light sources, since daylight won't be able to reach you. A player should prepare for all of this, and when they run low on resources they need to prepare for their eventual departure. I mean, it's the same in Minecraft. Sure, torches last forever, but eventually you can run out of resources and food, requring you to make the trek back to the surface world. I always enjoy these soujorns deep into the bowels of the earth... exploring... and discovering both riches and dangers. That should be all the encouragement the player need to enter the caverns.

Anyway, good ideas. :)

I didn't mean save points... I meant one little place outside of the cave, and if you die.... you spawn outside of the cave, but all the monsters respawn so it's near impossible to get your stuff back after you die, but, if you're smart enough, you can.

I would think one way would be to just camp outside the entrance and wait until it saves on a new day. I assume that normal saves still take effect while you are still inside the mine (i.e. auto-save at sunset and sunrise)?

Yeah, this way you can't just exit before dying and keep your stuff while escaping (except the materials you gained inside it of course)
