While running up the stairs, Violet's left foot crashes through one of the steps. She reaches down to pull it out, but it is stuck deep and is resisting.

"Damn it, I'm stuck!"

Violet tears at the boards, to reveal several shadow hands have taken hold of her ankle. Removing any of them without removing all of the others at the same time would cause her ankle to be torn to shreds. Violet looks down with a look of terror, sadness, and anger.

"F**k, f**k, f**k, f**k, F***********K!"

Violet turns to Pops.

"Get me out of this, please! Use some of your magic to get the hands to let go all at once, or something!"

"Don't leavme!"

Pops sighs.

"Shh... Calm down. Stay calm. They'll only get stronger if they sense your panic. They thrive on insanity."

As Violet's blood trickles down to the shadow hands, Pops grunts with effort. The best he could do is loosen the shadow's grip, but he's now exhausted.

(Will, Snowfall isn't a him.)

(As far as I know.)

The group raced upwards against the Forgotten, but their strength and will is crumbling as they get ever-closer to the Vortex.  Voices of despair shatter their resolve.  And the stairs just keep going up.  At last, the group turns a corner to find that the stairs just end.  They turn around just in time to see the Forgotten reaching them before all goes dark.

(Stay knocked out for now, I'm going somewhere today.)

The Spire hummed with power, its song of destruction echoing across the Islands.  Even those who have never heard of Shadowfall could feel something was wrong.  The air had a certain tension within it, like before a thunderstorm.  Animals were rarely seen.  Plants were beginning to wither away.  The demon lord was only three days from his goal.

At The Spire itself, Shadowfall finally pauses his chant after almost a nonstop week.  Under normal circumstances, he would not have taken such a risk.  But they had, at long last, been captured.  By quite an unlikely subject.

He wanted to speak with them.

The group wakes up in separate iron cages, hanging over quite a monumental drop.  The cages are suspended by chains, and they hang quite close together.  A bridge hangs out over the chasm in a way that does not apply to the laws of physics.

After quite a long time of hanging, the group begins to wonder why they have not been brutally lacerated by anything yet.  Their answer finally comes, in the form of the ebony doors at the end of the bridge admitting a new guest.  Shadowfall's hood hides any emotion on the demon's unseen face, but his cold eyes display almost a feeling of disappointment as they flick back and forth from each prisoner.

"I was truly expecting...more from you.  Your attempts to escape have come surprisingly far, but the fact that you were finally defeated by a few missing steps extinguished any hopes I had for a nice challenge."

The demon's voice is mocking.

"Although, I suppose, the last few weeks must have taken their toll on you.  Your own deaths...the slow draining of your essence...the loss of so many friends..."
