Joseph nods at Viti, stepping away from the lake. He directs his attention to Walrus.

"Basically, we were brought here by some bozo named Maxwell, and this is his original world, or something like that. And now, we're trying to get to a demon named Shadowfall who wants to destroy everything. Did that clear it up for you?"

As Will is surveying the land, one of the hooks falls out of the cliff. Will hangs onto the rope for dear life, but a small pebble falls into the lake, causing a ripple.

"I'm fine! I'm coming down now!" Will yells, not knowing anything that's going on with the lake.

Jakob curses violently, preparing for a fight; but nothing happens, aside from the creature swimming near the surface once more.

"Be more careful, Will!  There's something in the water!"

With everything seeming peaceful, Jakob climbs up to the pagoda,  However, the doors are massive iron structures, and for all Jakob's pushing and pulling, they refuse to budge.

"The door's locked..."

(Woah, missed a lot!)

Though people probably thought that they had left the little girl in the mountains, a sudden polite cough erupts from behind Viti-Mortos' dark shadow. And there she was, standing behind him where she wasn't a second earlier. Even Will can attest to this fact - it was almost as if she stepped out of his shadow personally and was standing there now. However, Will may have been too busy getting down to notice it.

The little girl winced at the sharp sunlight and you can get a clearer view of her now - painfully thin and pale, there's blood smeared over her lips making them a dark ruby-red, almost black. Her hair is incredibly well-kept, long and jet black and shiny but the length reaches around the back of her knees, incredibly smooth and flat like the surface of a pool of ink. Her nails look badly infected - her fingertips a dark purple with threads through her veins down to the knuckle and the fingernails themselves a twilight darkness, long and sharp and ridged and curled like talons. Her eyes were wide and the irises black, with flecks of gold shining in the sunlight.

Despite her unnerving appearance, she has the personality and the general feel of an eight year old. The little girl looked around in mild awe, eyes narrowed to dark slits against the sun's rays as a little clawed hand moved to wipe the encrusted blood off her mouth. It looks like her fascination with Viti-Mortos didn't stretch as far as her surprise with how bright everything is as she keeps close to his shadow but barely gives him a look. Her eyes flit over to the lake for a moment then she ignores it.

"I wouldn't expect the temple to have been open after so long, would you?" she asked Jakob curiously, moving close to the border of the demon's large shadow. She stared around the side of Viti-Mortos at the massive door, her inky hair cascading down to the floor as she tilts her head. "If it is locked, then surely we need...A key?"

The child trails off, sitting down cross-legged in the shade of the Shade. She looks down at the lake as her hair covers her features and hides the little twitch of her mouth as if she was going to smile. There was certainly something moving in the water, and this place had to withstand even Shadowfall's might in order to protect the beacon, so surely...

The child pointed at the lake, smiling. "You first."

Since then, the child lost interest in their plight and again resumed borderline obsession with Viti-Mortos. She tried to give one of his legs a prod and asks, plain as day and clearly as possible, "Any particular reason why you're helping them, or is it 'cause you find it funny too?" as if she was talking idly about a television programme or something similar. "Looking after the boy was hilarious for a while, but he got boring in the last few days. I'm sure glad your group arrived, though, I was running out of food."  The child spoke pointedly in the last sentence, as if the phrase could almost be taken two different ways instead of the obvious meaning behind it.

Joseph glances at the girl. Something about her presence seemed... Unnerving. But she seemed like a simple child. Something in the back of his mind tensed, but he shook it off, looking up at Will. He readies his telekinesis, wanting to do all he can to slow Will's plunge into the lake. He sends a telepathic message.

'Will, this will only work if you let it. Open up your mind. Make it vulnerable.'

Viti-Mortos growls at the girl, his muscles tensing.  "My aims are none of your concern.  Keep to yourself and we shall get along just fine."

The shade steps away from the girl, still looking warily towards her.  Viti did not trust her.  At all.

Jakob looks around for something that could possibly open the door.  His search brings him back to the lake, where he finds a small stone post rising out of the water.  The post appears to have a lever on top of it, and it seems to be in shallow water; water in which the enormous serpent couldn't swim in.

"Guys!  I think I found something!"

"..."

"I am so confused right now..."

The green figure from earlier rips out of WalrusMan's back like wings and he curls over WalrusMan and pulls his ears so it hurts badly.

"You're always confused!"

"After all, you're just a stupid, ignorant child."

The green figure pulls WalrusMan's hair and laughs loudly.

(Guys, I didn't fall into the lake. The rope's hook was undone from one side, so some rocks fell in the lake. I'm climbing up the rope and coming down to you guys.)

After finally climbing to the top of the rope, Will begins running down the stairs and catches up with the group.

"Okay, so basically, I saw nothing unusual. Just trees and this lake. You said something about something being in the lake?"

Will turns to see the girl.

"What's she doing here?"

(The water was too shallow for diving, but okay then!)

The doors slowly begin to pull open, but not before a powerful shaking knocks the group to the ground.

"Earthquake!" Jakob yells.  But  the word barely leaves his mouth when a gigantic drill bursts out of the ground, quickly followed by a large serpentine body.  Upon closer look, the creature is made from large stone segments, held together by electric-blue energy.  The drill splits open like a mouth and roars, and two blue gems slide into place on each side of the drill.

"The stones! Aim for the stones!"

Joseph shouts to remind the group, even though he saw Will already doing it. He had seen a nice few boulders while scanning the scenery, and he began building up the energy to fling one at one of the blue gems.

A large snakelike automaton built by the ancients to guard the Beacon Temple.  Can both swim, burrow and crawl on land.  Blue soul gems serve as both power sources and eyes.  Can also sense vibrations while burrowing.

Field notes!

"Damn it, how are we supposed to fight something that can just hide from us!? We'll have to attack fast!"

Will looks around his satchel frantically for something that can penetrate the magnetic field that repelled his arrows.

"What a day to not bring explosives..."
