Reddddd
The Monopoly of the Beefalo Hat & Eyebrella Right now, the game feels like it has a "correct" way to play that renders most items useless. Why would anyone ever use a Winter Hat when the Beefalo Hat is the only thing you’ll ever need? Why craft any Spring or Summer-specific gear when an Eyebrella and a Luxury Fan solve every problem? Most seasonal items feel like "noob traps" or optional fluff because they lack unique perks. Currently, insulation is just a numbers game, and since Deerclops is easy to kill and spawns every year, the "perfect" solution is too accessible. The Summer Fatigue & Flingomatics Summer is arguably the most frustrating season, not because it’s hard, but because it’s tedious. Flingomatics: They are expensive, they clog up base design, and they require constant fueling. They feel like a "tax" just for staying at your base. The "Caves" Meta: Currently, the best way to play Summer is to just not be at your base. Exploring the caves or the sea is fine, but it shouldn't feel like a requirement because staying above ground is too punishing for burnable structures. Ineffective Items: Summer items don't actually "cool" you; they just slow down how fast you overheat. This makes them feel useless compared to a Thermal Stone and a Fridge. Sea Content & Above Average Trees The Above Average Tree is a cool concept, but it's a "solution" that arrives far too late. By the time you navigate the clunky, RNG-heavy sea content to bring these to your base for natural cooling, you’ve already survived the hardest parts of the year. It’s a decoration item disguised as a utility item. The Fix: Give Niche Items a Purpose I’m not saying "remove" the underused items like the Insulation Backpack or Summer Frock. I’m saying they need special perks to make them relevant. If a Summer Frock made you immune to "Singeing" damage or helped you put out small fires by hand, it would have a niche. If certain hats gave sanity or speed boosts, they might actually compete with the Beefalo Hat. Bottom line: Items shouldn't just fall into disuse as the game updates. Summer needs to be more interesting than just hiding in the caves, and the "punishment" for being near your own base needs to be re-evaluated. What do you guys think? Do you ever use other summer, spring and winter items? Do you go out of your way to kill moose/goose, df and bearger or are they completely optional in DST that you just go after on a frog rain or wait for treeguard gang in bearger? I personally crafted them like 3 or 4 times but completely regret after 5 mins using any item that inst eyebrella or beefalo hat/thermal stone. 1 Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/171368-the-best-in-slot-problem-why-90-of-seasonal-gear-is-obsolete/ Share on other sites
gaymime
weeeell, i am not going to say i plant pines in the meteor biome and one season out of the year take my treeguards on a wee adventure but i am going to say i dont have much use for furs when i get them despite using eyes rather often for sure though a lot of these items were for progressing through different stages of weather tolerance back before dst was even a thing. it feels clunky and out of date because it kinda is. i do agree giving perks would certainly increase usage but unless you made those perks ridiculous and unreasonable for the item's availability it wont move the needle very much Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/171368-the-best-in-slot-problem-why-90-of-seasonal-gear-is-obsolete/#findComment-1865825 Share on other sites
brednas7 Posted yesterday at 08:44 AM Share Posted yesterday at 08:44 AM You're not wrong, but i can't say you're 100% correct ether. In public servers there is simple not enough beefalo horns/eyeballs for everyone, so alternative seasonal gear are valid to use on your head. Seasonal gear on the body on the other hand struggles to compete with backpack and termal stone, becease going from 23 inventory slots back to 15 is an opportunity cost and some inventory slot are usually taken by your light source, weapon, atleast one piece of armor, food, atleast one tool and/or resources to make/repair said tool and character specific item(s). If we move 2 inventory slots from backpack/piggyback to the main inventory, then seasonal body slot items have at least a small fighting chance against backpacks. If anything i like to see seasons get some changes so winter is less of a slow slog, summer stops trying to set stuff on fire and have seasons effect the caves in unique ways.
