 With the recent beta out now I thought I should share mt thoughts and feed back on the new Shadow Affinity.

First off I want to say revert the affinity back to how it was before. Why, because it is a lot worse than how it was before. The drones feel to weak with to much effort to use compared how it was originally, especially with how the Exploiterator drones breaking after a bit. Despite that I do like how the harvesting and combat effects were separated based on weather you have Nightmare Fuel/Pure Horror or either atrium inserted.

With that said here are some additional things I would add/change if you were to revert it.

  1. Make it so you don't have to have a chassis skill to unlock the Shadow Affinity. Considering the effects of the Shadow Affinity can be used without having any chassis unlike the lunar side, it makes no sense why you need to invest in the chassis skills to unlock the affinity.
  2. Add a visual effect for when you have Nightmare Fuel/Pure Horror or an atrium inserted. I think it would be cool if there was a visual effect similar to the Possessed Chassis of a shadowy aura emanating from WX if you had Nightmare Fuel inserted, and if you have Pure Horror inserted the aura get red streaks like on the Ink Blights. And if the Shadow Atrium is inserted tendrils wrap around you like it does in a chassis. It would also help to make the tendrils that lash out to vex enemies be more visually noticeable.
  3. Considering Pure Horror didn't have a function before this recent beta, my suggestion  is in addition to the effects of Nightmare Fuel, Pure Horror should also help chop/mine whatever object the player is currently chopping/mining similar to the recruited pigs or the Helping Horns skill. But only on the object the player is currently destroying to prevent accidental destruction of decorations.
  4. Possessed Shadow Atrium provides 25% planar damage instead of physical. The Possessed Shadow Atrium is supposed to be an upgrade of the normal one and being that it is gotten when rifts are active it make sense it would do planar instead of physical to help scale against planar defense.

I just saw a new beta had dropped after I posted this. While it does seem better (Drones not dying for one), I still prefer the original shadow affinity since having to insert something before you can craft the Drones feels like extra redundant steps.

the drones don't break anymore, but i agree, sadly i don't see klei going back, they fused two drone skills and make this new skill also affect the affinity drones, in their pov they have put too much work to go back

More functionality for exploiter drones when it comes to dealing with hoards of mobs would be nice, currently they reset every time you attack a new mob, which is especially noticeable with spin-cycle circuit items. Its definitely less important for spin-cycle items because you kinda just plow through hoards like its nothing, but without the spin-cycle hoards are especially rough. Maybe drones shoot a shadow missile that doesn't do damage but instead causes the area around that mob to be debuffed?
