I mean you say that but yeah the powers characters got from affinity skills always built onto the character's nature with the only exception being some of Winona's shadow's shadow skills and the devs themselves said it was special to her for lore purposes. Wx's shadow side broke that rule in it's original incarnation.

I feel like it would've made more sense for lunar to be Wagstaff drones (or WX mech) and shadow to be broken clockwork themed WX chassis.

or even make the shadow affinity be wx consuming nighmare FUEL or pure horror to power up for a time or use them to create diferents types of batteries that temporary make him stronger
