Hi everyone,

Fairly new to Rotwood here, been playing since 1.0 dropped and have put in about 35 hours so far. I uninstalled it the other day to reinstall and sadly when I logged back in my characters were gone. I assumed the steam cloud save would kick in but it didn't work. I foolishly created a new character1 to see what the map would look like, but it was a new start. Which got uploaded to steam cloud. Which overwrote the file I needed. /sigh

So no going back.

I'm really loving the game and was planning to start multiplayer after I finished the final boss for the second time (finished the entire hammer collection, plus boss hammers etc). I did quite a bit of grinding for the gems for all that though and I really cannot face doing it again. So my question is -

If I alter the save file will I get a steam multiplayer ban? I've looked into it, its not so complicated, the save encryption can be disabled in a plaintext config file. I'm really only looking to alter the number of gems I have, I don't mind redoing the runs to get the gear.

Do people multiplayer at lower levels if I do have to redo from scratch? I was kinda waiting to get the end / repeatable stuff before dipping a toe in multiplayer.

Hi Safrella, sorry to hear about your stomped steam cloud data. When you reinstalled the game, were you on a new computer or was it the one you had uninstalled from? If it was the same computer, were you on a different user account? Were you offline at all during this process?

If you have access to the original computer you may still be able to retrieve your old saves. We hold on to a few backups in the following directory. C:\Users\<windows login name>\AppData\Roaming\Klei\Rotwood\<steam-id>\backup\savedata.zip\

Hi CaleyC, thanks for the reply.

It was the same computer & same user account on Bazzite Fedora. I didn't go offline during the process. A few minutes ago, I created a new character and let it upload to Steam cloud. The files get uploaded successfully - see attached - but on reinstall the game does not pick them up. I just tested it, and the character_slot_1 in the image is not picked up on reinstall.

You can check and see if your old saves are in our backup directory

 ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/2015270/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Roaming/Klei/Rotwood/steam-<steamid>/backup/savedata.zip.

Proton keeps userdata in the 'compatdata' folder. We will try reproduce the steam cloud issue on our end, thanks for the info.
