SKIP TO 2:24 FOR THE FIGHT

After the YOTK update gave us the ability to tame clockworks, I became obsessed with their power in combat, not only for horde mobs, but for bosses as well. While I've showcased their power against certain bosses before, it was only through using console commands and the Too Many Items mod to spawn things in, which is good for showing what's potentially possible, but a strat's effectiveness can vary when putting it into practice. So I decided to make a new world and try to get a clockwork army as fast I as could.

I decided to go with Wickerbottom for this run as in addition to a quick head start, knowing every Science Machine recipe, her Lunar Grimoire book would help skip the time waiting for a full moon and allow me to summon clockworks from statues pretty much whenever. Trying to hack them with a Morning Star was pain with allied clockworks though, as the bishop's would melt the new summons whenever I struck them with the weapon. Luckily, they're pretty slow, so if I walked a good distance away from them towards the statues, I'd be able to ally them before they butted in. I think the Tingle Node can bypass this issue, but I mostly stayed topside in order to locate the pieces, so I wouldn't have been able to fight Scrappy for the fences. I think the End is Nigh book can also hack clockworks too, but I couldn't find red gems to make it, and without rain insulation it'd probably hurt me more than help me.

That's awesome. I would definetly try this if I didn't have to euthanize them afterwards. Not being able to leave them in a spot is pretty annoying.

Yeah, that's quite disappointing. I don't think I'll gut mine immediately, though, as they don't stay too close to me whenever I'm building or working. I do wish you could right-click them or make an item that would make them patrol a single spot.

hehe nice them Bishops are great bug zappers lol and i might do that as well tho i may add rooks to the mix hehe

only thing i dont like with the tamed clockworks is the lack of herd mentality like if one clockwork gets attacked without any aggroing on whatever attacked the other clockworks doesnt defend it.... well from what i seen from the tamed ones... i think the wild ones do defend eachother if close enough

Yeah, that's one thing that annoyed me with them. The wild ones protect the others when attacked but not ones that're tamed...I think this is probably an oversight, though. This might be fixed in a future update, along with nerfing them a bit. Can't say what they'll change, but I feel they'd probably cause them to panic in the BQ and AFW fights.

I think it is a cool method to kill bee queen. Do you think it would have been more or less effort to use the tentacle method?

Tentacles are a lot more dangerous, but probably less upkeep with that books can regenerate in wicker's bookcase

I think in terms of speed, Tentacles definitely have the edge. The clockwork method is much safer but more time consuming, needing to explore the map for the suspicious marble and the sculpture set piece, getting a morning star and gears to tame them, picking the opal from the archives and exploring the ocean to find moon moths, as well as rocks to build the statues you want. Even so, Bishops can be much more deadly than Tentacles and are able to move wherever.

Thank you for showcasing this without using console commands!
I did the same thing on a Klei pub last week, and it was so much fun. Joined on day 3, so I had to fight Shadow Pieces to get the blueprints and needed to wait until the next full moon after that, haha. Wickerbottom is a good pick to bypass the waiting!

Yeah, no problem! I feel like it's easy to say something like that is broken when you spawn in everything you want, but it's usually a lot less simple when put into practice. I've actually recorded more footage of my army killing other bosses, so I might turn that into something.

Totally agree! Looking forward to it, whenever you end up posting it somewhere.
