Jakepeng99
I always felt like the base is very static. Mobs either destroy your base, or do nothing. There is no in between. But marotters are an exception. I love how they will steal a few pieces of food, like actual wild animals. Having to defending your base from animals stealing food is more engaging. You also get a chance to steal it back if you really care. So why not have more mobs like this? Rascal rodents who will steal food from drying racks and containers. The balancing for this, is that you will always be able to stop these mobs from the source, just like marotters. But regrowth should exist. I think Electric Fences have ended things like this unfortunately. Quick barrier around the icebox and you're sorted. I don't think only those mobs do that, most mobs will try to eat or grab something from your base, the thing with most mobs is that they are tied to a spawner in a specific location. We have rabbits that try to eat veggies/fruits of the ground. Birds eat seeds from the ground gobblers do the same with the addition of targeting berry bushes first. Pigmen try to eat any food on the ground. Catcoons will grab meats and toy related items. Moleworms will grab minerals but don't destroy them. Merms will eat veggies off the ground. Bats eat meat. hounds eat meat. Mctusk will actually take meats if it's not distracted by you or his hounds eat it.. My point is that most mobs already take items, most of them only take food and have delicated animation to eating The success of the marotter it's because his amazing design and interactions with the environment like any other good DST mob it feels alive and has it's own little animations when it's doing things on his own. The real problem is looking for the space in the world that lacks a mob. If a place lacks something In would say both the deserts in DST feel kinda empty maybe klei can add a bird like thing that hoard garbage form the tumbleweeds or looks like a tumbleweed in disguise. For the oasis IDK maybe a "dry" kiwi bird that hides on the sand and drinks water from the oasis in the night and "dries" in the day (I know kiwis don't live in the desert but how Klei can resist adding this irresistible mob pun). That’s not entirely true, if Rabbit King bunny’s can dig under ground and pop up elsewhere it would be cute but maybe annoying if they could tunnel under your electric fence, and tunnel back out after raiding your base. And if DST ever does a crossover with Atomicrops I fully expect Crop level raids at least. Personally I wanted Carrats to be able to do it. Im not counting meat on the ground. The solution is a fridge or chest. Id really like mobs to interact with structures more in general (in a non greifing way). For example, spiders could cover structures in cobwebs, making them unable to be used unless cleared with a razor. Or, use your bare hands to do it slower and lose sainity. Webber would be able to use them while covered in cob webs, and can clear him easily with his hands without drawbacks. That's absolutely fine mike, but you can't just say 'that's not entirely true'. What do you mean? You're talking about a hypothetical mob, you can say what you like about it. 'Not entirely true', madness. 21 minutes ago, Mike23Ua said: Atomicrops is a RogueLite tower defense game where you attempt to defend your farm plots from mutant creatures trying to eat them. hoxi
There's an easy one from a creature that could also use some brain updates altogether to make their "world feels alive" mechanics work a bit more like it was intended (I can go into more detail on this but it'd be a bit off topic), and that's Pengulls. Pengulls, when they're starving and slowly dying (and also become aggressive, which causes them to attack if close to them), could be made to steal food from containers. Just probably not from equipped containers like backpacks (since the player inventory would also need to be included at that point to make sense, and they'd probably be a bit too similar to Slurtles). There's no indication that Pengulls are starving and will aggro if approached, but it might be more obvious if something like this was to be added to them, and it could allow the player to test if they're currently starving or not (they could technically add some unique strings for this since the functionality is there to give different statuses on being examined depending on hunger, but there's no strings defined so the default examination ones are always used). Yeah, I'm aware they're more up in your face with how they set their rookeries compared to something like Marotters, and could end up close (or even inside your base), but there are ways to deal with them, violence included as usual. Plus, winter is a season that already disables a bunch of other dangers and can be considered a pretty safe season, Deerclops aside. If anything, they could further update their mechanics too, I know they could use that and I know players like that sort of thing (at least, more than post rift stuff..). Having unique eggs and maybe even Pengull babies could be really nice (right now, they don't even take care of their eggs as intended, their brain logic is a bit outdated and funky).
