Lunar mutations after death are extremely common in a lot of creatures.

There is no reason for our characters to be immune to this effect, especially with the big elephant in the room:

They got what the Lunar side does and should have gotten.

Imagine fighting your mutilated, mutated corpse to get back your items. Gives a lot of insight into how the Lunar side operates, and gives an unforgettable experience.
