Was he normal? Who was his parents? Were they good parents? Was he an orphan? Did he go to school? Who was his friends? What caused him to want to isolate with his science?

I sort of wonder if his university education was interrupted by the war... and when he came back to his studies, he wasn't exactly mentally unscathed.

In terms of childhood, his family was likely well-off (he probably wouldn't call himself 'gentleman' otherwise.) His quote for the bishop suggests an aversion to the clergy, but it might be his general disdain of superstition (and by extent, religion.) He seems like a bit of an oddball, but I don't know if he was always like that or if it was induced by his isolation (the length of which we don't know.)

I have to agree with the above

He keep calling himself that to keep his ego elevated I think.
As well as him having need to constantly remind himself how talented and scientist he is after literally any prosaic deed.

The thought of Wilson enlisting for ww1 is so funny to me I can't explain why.

I think this is thematically a preferable way to portray Wilson as it makes suddenly being dumped in a survival situation all the more dangerous because he never had to actually fend for himself.

I always wondered if he tried to get into science to prove himself, having a rich and snobby family that looks down on him for being the "talentless son" definitely feels like a good setting for him.

The term is being used to mean "self-employed", because he was trying to earn a living through his own research after being kicked out of the university.

This exactly.
