Are they trying to kill the game? Why not update the servers.

I keep hearing reports about people crashing the servers. So I suppose they can't really restart them until they find a way to stop the crashes. Or if they already have restarted them, they got crashed instantly again.

(also turning off klei server's wouldn't really kill the game. The like 54 people that play klei servers for more than 2 hours would be really sad and that's it)

I have been saying for years that klei should shut down their official servers because it is only a PR nightmare for them riddled with griefers. There hasn't been one positive post about official klei servers that I've seen and servers are hosted cheaply and any crash or restart results in a loss of data but this doesn't matter for survival mode servers anyway.

I don't understand how public survival servers have any reason to exist anymore now that DST has so much late game content to access and even when you do, the idea is to enjoy the advantages of the new items not for it to reset.

Survival servers can be fun If you enjoy the roguelike genre but only when you are playing alone and no one can reset the world for you but its still not much different from endless mode for experienced players as you can carry LFG and build meat effigy for safety.

I think you really underestimate just how many players don't have good enough PCs to host a decent multiplayer server, especially in low-end areas like Vietnam. You'd be surprised how often those 5 Klei Singapore servers filled up.

Not host, just joining other random servers I mean.

Just wondering: do you play on Klei Official public servers yourself?

The biggest reason why we can't get to late game content on public servers right now, is because servers crash when there are too many items in the world. Think about too much stuff on the ground (not placed in chests), cards/gems/materials at JIMBO and too many (tier 3) spider dens. Servers tend to crash during Spring/Summer, especially if rifts are on, because the servers are not able to handle all of the items that are generated from the start.

If Klei would boost the official servers to handle late game events (for example: https://forums.kleientertainment.com/klei-bug-tracker/dont-starve-together/lunar-hail-event-crashes-klei-server-disconnects-all-players-and-resets-server-to-day-1-r48750/) or the game itself would at least be coded to automatically stack things/"clean up" items, there will be enough capable players that get to late game content on public Klei servers – even if a server only survives for a day (because of other players regenerating it the next day).

From my experience most random/public servers are:

  1. Modded to the brim.
  2. Not supposed to be "public", because the host actually forgot to make it private.
  3. With admins who easily kick people because they just want to, or for the sole reason of people joining they don't know.

Not everyone is able to host either, like @milsonmeow said, and not everyone can find a server or group to play with. Joining official servers from Klei is very accessible and gives opportunities to meet people from different experience levels, too. I would've never gotten this far in both game content as experience, if I didn't play on official Klei servers.
