mr. brj
I actually promised myself to not post any content I share on my Youtube channel on the forums anymore, but I decided to make an exception for this one. Not only because I invested more time into this video than I otherwise do, but also because I have recently seen a few posts that falsely identify certain game plans that involve well thought strategies as speedruns, while also looking down upon speedrunning in general. I think this is a huge disrespect both to gamers that like speedrunning and to good gamers who are not speedrunners at all. So I want to share some concrete examples as to what speedrunning actually looks like from the perspective of someone who enjoys casual speedruns. Please keep in mind that speedrunning is a playstyle that prioritizes achieving a certain objective in the fastest means possible, and while it might not be the playstyle you yourself would consider to be fun, that there are enough people out there who consider achieving a certain objective as fast as possible as a legitimate hobby. However, speedrunning doesn't necessarily have to be a "sweaty" hobby, especially in DST. This game allows for a casual speedrunning playstyle if you are not concerned with getting a world record time. As long as you are willing to test your own limits, you can very much speedrun a specific objective in DST without having to invest too much time in the real life, and this is what I mean with a "casual speedrun". If you are good at kiting bosses and/or if you have good map reading skills, you are pretty much set for attempting a speedrun. The only thing you will have to worry about is how much you will have to trim off from your usual gameplan to achieve the fastest time possible for completing a specific objective within your own limitations. And this is why I created this video: to show some speedrunning strategies that are not necessarily world record standards, but are still easy to replicate and to improve upon if you want to give speedrunning a chance. I hope that you enjoy the video! Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/164850-casual-speedrunning/ Share on other sites
Guille6785
Very good video mr. brj, I hope more people can see it and give speedrunning a shot :flushed: Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/164850-casual-speedrunning/#findComment-1807151 Share on other sites

Dingle
I do somewhat-fast running. Speedrunning videos and tip videos like this are always very helpful to me. I try to avoid outright exploits though. As an example, I never did void walking when it was available. However, I'm not above glitching a point for Hermit. I really hope they add more options to her. Right now I'm practicing hermit + moonstone event. After some of that, I will try solo celestial as a goal. If klei added new things the hermit liked every patch it would be nice. Imagine if you could plant a knobbly tree and bring glommer to her, then give her 8 figs for a point (Where she would jam the tree herself with these resources.) After all, she likes umbrellas, cool in the summer, fruits, and the like. This is sort of a big combo of all of these things. (You could take glommer back when she is done. Possibly extra hyjinks when she cares for the tree too well and upgrades past what we normal players can bring it to.) Rarely adds tree jam to bundle of thanks, more often just a spare fig. She rarely needs you to clear out striders after this. Planting a three tile of area of grass makes her muse about how long its been since she's touched grass. Building a dock out to help her reach deeper waters with her fishing rod. (Possibly adding a small little island with something she likes that's been eternally out of reach you can bridge her out to.) Fishing trawlers for her. Sometimes she will pass you a small or seasonal fish with a bundle of thanks. Fishing bin. ETC ETC. Not saying I despise her current tasks, but being able to vary what I do would make me feel so relieved. As for the main thread topic, I do actually enjoy occasionally doing early challenges of ancient guardian/bee queen, its just my normal group tends to be screaming for help so often that I don't really have time to do much other than keep the boat afloat and try to prep the major objectives in my spare time. I'm glad to hear that:D As for the exploits, even though I share similar thoughts towards using them myself, I find it very interesting to watch how far good runners can take those exploits to save time on their runs. I wish the fish spawn mechanics can be tweaked sometime in the future, such that finding a heavy fallounder doesn't feel like winning the lottery. I also wish you all the success and luck with your CC attempts:D Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/164850-casual-speedrunning/#findComment-1807165 Share on other sites

I'd like it if you could build extra bee boxes, hand her a bee queen hat, or build a toadstool lamp on the island (which would also keep her out at dusk). Maybe building a scaled furnace on her island too? Maybe building a scaled furnace on her island too? Scaled furnace + Bigger than average tree sounds like those would be great moderately big tasks for multi-point rewards. Since they are more or less permanent versions of things she has regular problems with. Especially since my solo runs are to practice for group servers with friends.
