I just don't like they just make skills, make as many to make up to the number, and then limit players to study 15. The number 15 is not special at all, it should not be unchanging for all. I mean they usually forget this number when design a tree, they just take a brain storm to make as many skills as possible, if they unable to brainstorm enough skills, they will break down a single skill into multiple ones, just similar to what they did in Wolfgang's tree. Once make up to the number, their work finished, nobody will care the 15 limit. There're always crazy fans who will come up with excuses to justify these designs, claiming how reasonable they are. But in reality, these decisions were made impulsively without any logical basis. hyoton123
I don’t have a problem with a flat number of skill points. You get them by using the characters (well, you’re supposed to) and it’s good to put everyone on the same progression for them. I think 15 is too much though but thats a personal thing. That's another question, once you unlock it, you could use these skills everywhere. In fact, there's not a situation that you study more with you explore more. Some people advice that you could do some precedent tasks to unlock certain skills. For example, Wilson's torch could be brighter and more durable as you use more and make more. Willow could release fire ball after she use star caller's staff three times. Dyzrespect
As OP said there are trees that work better and worse with 15 points, but Klei at least examines all trees and makes them have at least sort of satisfying paths and trade offs each time, the problem in my opinion is when a character is disproportionately incentivized to have to tediously respec their traits depending on what they're doing, like Wendy's mourning glory/grave moving traits vs ones like Wurt who can respec once after building her structures and be good forever. So while I don't 100% agree with OP, I think there's still a lot of problems with the overall design of skill trees that don't need to be there. I think the people who don't understand this viewpoint don't understand that you can have access to any trait at any time provided you just respawn yourself with the celestial portal. They don't use the celestial portal to respec their skill trees, so it doesn't affect them, so they don't care. For those of us that do it gets increasingly annoying as more trees come out and we are constantly using the portal to respec. It's not an issue that affects everyone, but could be solved pretty easily by just locking a few world-locked points behind each Rift Boss or something, leaving meaningful decisionmaking for the early game tree while eliminating mid-late game swap-shenanigans. This swapping aspect of skill trees has nothing to do with "choice" or "balance", it's just tedious. I don’t really like the idea. Thats the kind of busy work or repetitive “questing” that people already complain about.
