How do you actually befriend a catcoon?

I tried giving it some "toys" and "food," but it neither follows me nor does it give gifts. I've given it twigs, grass, rope, silk, spider glands, spider nests, jet feathers, down feathers, beefalo wool, papyrus, meat, morsels, live moleworms, and 4 different pig king toys, yet in 5 days it has only thrown up once and it was wet goop. I think I must be doing something wrong.

what character do you play as? catcoons dont care for non-human chars

Playing as Wickerbottom in a lights-out world (if that has any impact).

Oh, I dropped the items and let the cat pick them up. I didn't realize you have to actually "give" it to the cat by clicking on them. smh.
