How do ocean trawlers work offscreen?

I heard ocean trawlers work offscreen, catching about 1 fish a day. So I tried putting some in an unloaded area on the coast.

3 were close to each other. 2 were spaced further away. All were right next to the shore.

I checked 3 days later, none of them caught a single fish. What did I do wrong? Or was I wrong about them working offscreen?

once the net is full for a period of time the net "breaks" and it releases the fish. i could never get the hang of it and just dont use it at all now

I actually bring one trawler + 4 monster meat with me whenever I sail for Malbatross shawl. Instantly spawn the bird.

I'll try it again, but I don't think the nets were even broken

They are a bit weird and I think the game just rolls a die.

My nets never broke, so it wasn't that.

I also tried again, but put monster meat in the nets. Not a single fish.

I'm stumped. Will try again with kelp.

I actually wonder if something broke. The devs did mess with unloaded stuff, that's why spider nests grow so much faster now.

Will try again. Are you completely unloading yours, or are they just slightly offscreen in your base?

Usually I hover around base. The only way to guarantee fish is to live on pearls island. Since she spawns 2 school of fish everyday

More traps together = less chance for a catch

more land tiles around a trap = less chance for a catch

I saw that video. The video also says that offscreen, the land tiles thing doesn't really matter. He also clarifies that the "more traps together" only applies to like 4 tiles.
