Comprehensive skill tree thoughts V2 (+ Abigail control & global effects)

Recommended Posts

Now that Wendy has received significant updates, I'd thought I'd make an update to my original post with thoughts on the skill tree:

  • Gold - Skill Added since last update
  • Green - Skills I believe are in particularly good spots
  • Orange - Skills that still need Modification
  • Purple - New skills to the tree
  • Red - Altered connections between skills

Now once again, to sort from most to least significant:

  • Escape/Attack (Buff) - currently, Wendy's flower is cumbersome to manage in either control scheme, due to requiring selecting the mouse via either mouse key (difficult to do while kiting) or by selecting via mouse, the latter of which especially then creates a sizable delay before any command can be issued. This is a pretty big problem for a dedicated "dodge" command for Abigail, especially as it then comes with a lengthy, uncancellable animation for Wendy. As such, the only thing the dodge command does over unsummoning her is automatically respawning Abigail upon completion. To properly function as an in combat dodge command, it needs to at the very least not have a forced animation, but also preferably a global button shortcut to bring up the menu.
  • Dark Petals II/Global Dark Petals Craft (New/Global) - the updated flower shroud is a good item, but it feels like it should be tier 3 capstone of a skill line, rather than a tier 2 skill. As such, a mid-tier for the Dark Petals line would add more uses to dark petals and increase the insight cost (thus improving decision making). To add further uses to dark Petals, some of these ideas could also be made into global crafts. Some Ideas for the crafts would be:
    • Totally normal sapling - Dark Petals x 10 + Nightmare Fuel x 4, sapling that grows into totally normal tree over a 20 day period
    • Curse remover - Dark Petals x 5 + Banana x 1, instantly removes all accursed trinkets.
    • Petals/Dark Petals can be used as filler in the crock pot.
    • Greater Garland - 5x Dark Petals + 5x Petals, attracts butterflies to wearer
  • Updated Haunt Effects (Global) - Haunting has added a bunch of cool new applications for Wendy, but it also hasn't really been updated since the game launch. Having it interact with more recent content would be an appreciated change, such as:
    • Haunting a Powder Monkey has it drop a cursed trinket
    • Has a chance of randomizing seeds collected from garden plants
    • Forces Pearl outside her home
    • Forces Nurse spiders to use their heal attack
  • Pipspook Quest II (Rework) - The bigger issue with Pipspook presently, instead of the rewards, is just how relatively RNG dependant it can be for Pipspooks to spawn. Instead of increasing the length (and therefore the commitment of the trip, instead add a method to summon pipspooks on command, such as decorating a grave with dark petals (increasing their usefulness aswell).
  • Double Draught *(new skill) - Putting an asterisk next to this skill, because it may not actually be necessary depending on if the Flower Shroud & escape improvements reduces Abigail's dependence on healing potions.  Presently, for 99% of the time, the only potions worth using on Abigail are the healing ones. To promote potion diversity, this skill should allow Healing potions to be applied at the same time as any one of Abi's other potions. This would, in my opinion, give almost all the other potions more use cases - shield potions in caves, damage during the day, and movement for general circumstances.
  • Graves By Wendy (Buff) - Graves by Wendy isn't a bad skill, but it doesn't really fit as the ending of the branch. To improve it, allow Wendy to repair touchstones using NF and Moon glass. Touchstones being one time use and unrepeatable is kind of annoying, Especially as res tools have become more common in skill trees (Wigfrid, Wortox & Winona), this buff wouldn't be especially powerful due to predetermined locations, but would be nice convenience.
  • Deep Draught II (Rework) - As mentioned in the double draught point, Wendy's potions duration isn't a big concern, Although I appreciate compressing the skill line into 2 perks rather than 3, I think this perk line could take a similar approach to the sisturn line and further reduce it down to one. The new perk could be slightly restoring some Sanity to Wendy when applying a potion, allowing better sanity while exposed to massive insanity auras.
  • Improve the skill tree layout - Currently the skill trees got a fairly messy layout, when it can fairly easily have its perks grouped into "Abigail", "Graveyard" and "Alignment." Also, it could very easily be more symmetrical, while now its not.

I’ll be honest, I don’t really think it’s a super difficult time sink in combination with how trinkets spawn considerably closer to each other/the distance to find them from taking the first quest perk, and the reward is much greater if you combine it with the third perk (you average around 18-20 glory per pipspook, which is a very noticeable increase).

I feel it would be better to merge 2 and 3 together (as the second tier does feel a little iffy if you don’t take the third) and add a way to make pipspooks more consistently, rather than scrapping it outright.
