Gassy Moo Ranching

Recommended Posts

Hi

1. Yes. You can wild plant gas grass, or find an alternative chlorine source. Those include the bleach stone hopper (salt + gold), the rust deoxidizer (salt + rust), or space mining (in Spaced Out).

2. It is indeed much easier to get Brackene from the pulveriser but you will find the process to be far more resource and time consuming than milking.

A single Moo will yield you 50Kg/cycle of Brackene for a bit of dupe labour, 1Kg chlorine, 50Kg dirt and some power for night time lighting. (This one will depend on your asteroid's sunlight. You may alternatively choose to add more grass to compensate for the lack of night time growth.)

Getting the same amount through the pulverizer will require 100 seconds of basic dupe labor (before skill adjustment, real number may be lower), and, assuming you a running on unmutated sleet wheat (a fair compromise between efficiency and complexity), 537.5 Kg of water and 125Kg of dirt.

So it depends on your resource economy and how much of the stuff you need. If you just want a tiny bit of plastium, Moos are not worth the trouble but, if you intend to use if for ranching, you won't get much efficiency out of the Pulverizer.

2. Is it worth it? You can milk them for Brackene (making a true automated farming possible) but honestly it is so much easier to get Brancene with a Plant Pulverizer.

If you use ceiling lights or the mercury lamp for the light, gassy moos are a low power, low resource source of meat. I find them to be a cost effective source of food on distant planets

Spoken from the perspective of someone who abstains from wild-planting or starvation ranching

1. Is sustainable Gassy Moo farming possible without a chlorine geyser?

With a gold source they are chlorine positive if you cook the brackene, desalinate the brine which is a byproduct of the cooking and use the salt in a bleachstone hopper. The bleachstone can be molten to chlorine.

If you need a few pieces of plastium probably. But if you want to brackene to save on dupe ranching labor they are great and improved my fps since there were less ranching tasks for cuddle pips.
