I am writing as a passionate Wendy main with over 1,000 hours of experience in Don't Starve Together and an additional 300 hours in Don't Starve. Wendy has always been my favorite character due to her unique dialogue and aesthetic, and I have dedicated most of my playtime to mastering her abilities.

Anticipation and Disappointment

Since the 2024 Chinese New Year, I have eagerly awaited the release of Wendy's skill tree update. After nearly a year of anticipation, I was deeply disappointed upon seeing the beta release yesterday. While I appreciate the ongoing efforts to balance and enhance the game, the current state of Wendy's skill tree feels underpowered and unbalanced.

Developer's Update

I want to acknowledge and thank Jason, the game developer, for the recent Game Update - 643115. In the update notes, Jason mentioned:

"Beta releases are intended to be a time when we release a test version of the game and issue balance changes and fixes while we work toward live. We expect to make tuning changes and adjustments once we release the game to the beta branch and gather feedback. Since Wendy's tuning was fairly low in a lot of places when it released to the beta, in this update we have raised a bunch of the effects of her skill tree."

While I understand the intention behind these adjustments, many players feel that the changes have not sufficiently addressed the issues, leaving Wendy still feeling underpowered in several aspects.

Community Feedback from China

The reaction from the Chinese player base has been overwhelmingly negative. I first noticed the updates on Bilibili, a popular video-sharing platform in mainland China. The top three most-viewed videos discussing Wendy's skill tree update have numerous comments expressing frustration and disappointment. Additionally, discussions on Tieba (a popular Chinese forum) show that nearly half of the threads are dedicated to Wendy's skill tree update, highlighting widespread dissatisfaction.

Translated Comments Include:

• "Before: Wendy: 'Abigail, I know it's dangerous outside, but I need you.'

  After: Wendy: 'Abigail, I know it's dangerous outside, but I can make you more dangerous.'"

• "Fam, these skills are amazing! Now Wendy only needs 12 Dark Petals + 3 Mourning Glory to craft 12 petals and make Garland. Isn't that strong? By using the Deconstruction Staff to deconstruct Garland, you can get petals back. This is unbeatable! Wearing the Construction Amulet can save half the petals, which is incredible. Hahaha..."

• "It's so funny, you might as well delete all the skill tree values and add a little dress for Wendy. Maxing it out to give your sister a dress is ten thousand times better than this overpowered tree you have now."

• "Sigh, the worst skill tree, no exception. My suspenseful heart is finally dead."

The Impact on the Chinese Community

As a long-time player, it is disheartening to see such widespread dissatisfaction among the community. Many players feel that Wendy, a character they've grown to love over the years, has been left behind in terms of balance and utility. A Call to Listen to the Chinese Community

The Chinese community is an integral part of the global Don't Starve Together player base, and their voices deserve to be heard. I respectfully urge the developers to take this feedback into account and reevaluate Wendy's skill tree. I honestly don't see why anyone should care.

You don't like an update? Then go and make a post expressing what you don't like, why, then make a suggestion on what you would prefer.

The devs will read and decide on what they feel is best based on feedback.

Complaining non-stop and saying you're disappointed is irrelevant. Don't waste your time making a thread asking to be listened to. Go make a thread with suggestions for changes. The devs will read it, and will decide on what to do based on their own vision for the skill tree and on the feedback received.

Wendy is a strong character though, so she most likely won't get a strong skill tree. You should expect it to be closer to Wolfgang's skill tree instead of Willow's.

Also, cyjs, nobody needs to reply to suggestions, suggestions are there for the devs to see, not players. Players will comment if they're interested, but the ones that need to see the suggestions are the devs, and they do see it.

I agree with this so much everytime I ( as wendy main ) complain about wendy skill tree add no value to wendy I always recieve negative comments like (its your problem, im ok with it, why should you care, etc etc.)

you see cjys's point is not that people should reply to suggestion posts more, but is that people who complains about chinese players doing nothing but complaining couldn't see that there are a also lot of suggestions made by the chinese players, like this one.

So basically cyjs is complaining about those who complains about complains only knows to complain.

Indeed, sadly. People seems to favour such topics more than anything else in all over the world, which I thought only happens in China when the gacha game funs start a war. I myself can't say that I'm different...

lets not drown in hate speech and disappointment just yet. they open beta phase to get feedbacks.
they will work on it until the next patch then u can give more feedback.
its not fixed yet. they gathering data from the feedback, usually they cook something good fast. but i feel like with this much clash they didnt released patch frequently like they used to. which is sad.
the beta only been few days its even with weekends. but u guys already flooded forum with many hate speech and even more sad you guys bombarded steam review with negative review 

this is not how u treat the game that u claimed to love.

Yes, that's good. Now wait for the next beta update and see what the devs have made. Then you make more suggestions after that if you don't like the state of the skill trees after the next update. Betas are an iterative process, after all. Though the devs are, of course, the ones with the final say.

Like, seriously, I don't care where you're from or what your favorite character is. This is a beta forum. Discuss the current state of the beta, report bugs, and make suggestions. That's what this forum is all about. Everything else is just unnecessary flooding.

Not all Chinese players share this perspective, so it would be more precise to specify which groups express dissatisfaction with this aspect. From my experience as a player with over 3,000 hours, I personally do not have significant complaints regarding Wendy's abilities. That said, it would indeed be an improvement if the developers could enhance the hired ghost to serve as a more advanced form of relocation skill. Additionally, it might be worth considering whether the relocated tombstone could function as a potential mechanism for resurrection.

I'd like to clarify that my original post from three days ago on Saturday was intended to share the situation within the Chinese community, simply describing the facts rather than to complain or seek validation. I appreciate your efforts to soothe and ease the current situation, and I agree that we need to wait for the hotfix after the initial release.

Additionally, I have made two other posts:

1. "A Wendy Main's Honest Thoughts on the Beta Skill Tree Update" – where I expressed my personal feelings and thoughts as a Wendy main.

like, it hasn't even been a week yet and they're acting as if it were a systematic persecution by a fascist government, relax my god, there are characters who were actually bad, they received a bad tree and they only fixed it months later, and the tree remained weak, It hasn't even been 7 days since Wendy yet for God's sake...

Hi xhyom,

I understand your frustration—it can be really disheartening when updates don't meet our expectations right away. However, I believe things will improve with time as Klei releases hotfixes and continues to refine Wendy's skill tree based on player feedback.

It's only been a short period since the initial beta release, and iterative updates are a normal part of the development process. Klei has shown commitment to balancing characters in the past, even if it takes some time.

Thanks for sharing your perspective. I'm hopeful that with ongoing updates, Wendy's skill tree will become more balanced and enjoyable for all of us.
