A Wendy Main's Honest Thoughts on the Beta Skill Tree Update

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I'm not entirely sure whether this should be posted in the General Discussion Forum or the Beta Branch Forum, but since it relates to the recent Wendy skill tree update, I'll place it here. I'm a dedicated Wendy main and a long-time player with over 10 years of experience, having devoted almost all of my playtime to Wendy. I deeply love Don't Starve Together and would like to share my thoughts and feelings about the recent updates.

My Journey with Don't Starve

Don't Starve Together is, in my opinion, one of the best games out there—it perfectly suits my taste. I started playing Don't Starve about ten years ago during my school days. Despite a tight schedule where I only had one free afternoon each week to rest, I devoted that time to exploring the game. I loved the experience of starting with nothing and building a small but cozy base. Sitting around a fire pit as snowflakes fell, feeling the chill of the wilderness and warming up by the fire—it was immersive and magical. Moments like hearing the music "Walking Through Winter" (a song from the official Don't Starve soundtrack and my favorite—I still listen to it as I fall asleep) while gathering grass and twigs on my little farm are memories I cherish.

Initially, I played as Wilson (as many beginners do), but I quickly switched to Wendy because, in the stillness of this world, even the quiet moments feel less lonely with good company. I was drawn to the idea of being accompanied by her sister, Abigail, who could help me navigate the darkness and the wildness of The Constant. I adored Wendy's quotes and her melancholic tone. One that stands out is when she examines an umbrella and says, "The clouds weep." There's a certain beauty in how she reflects on life and death.

Transition to Don't Starve Together

As time went on, I moved from Don't Starve to Don't Starve Together because it was continually updating with new content, and I could play with my friends. My affection for Wendy grew even more—I even changed my social media icons to her image. I collected Wendy garage kits and changed my wallpaper to a smiling Abigail (the official in-game loading screen image from the last Wendy update). I was thrilled when Klei made Wendy more viable in multiplayer games during the previous update. I love this character who has lost her dearest family member yet continues to persevere.

Thoughts on the Beta Release

Regarding the recent beta release: I have been eagerly awaiting Wendy's skill tree for a long time, especially over the past year—a year filled with anticipation and hope. I hoped Klei would surprise us with something amazing. However, I was a bit disappointed when I saw the updates. That said, I'm really grateful that the Klei developers are giving players a chance to be heard, and I appreciate that we, as players and game developers, can discuss the game's development together—this is rare for many video games.

Suggestions for the Skill Tree

Wendy is a character who willingly steps into The Constant (Maxwell's world) to search for traces of her twin sister, Abigail. She longs deeply for the return of her deceased sister; they are bound together by an unbreakable bond.

In the game, Abigail defends Wendy from mobs and does everything to protect her. Similarly, Wendy does everything she can to bring Abigail back or protect her, even in her ghostly form from Abigail's Flower. I believe this bond is key to understanding Wendy's character.

While I'm not a game developer, I feel that Wendy's skill tree should reflect the deep connection between the two sisters. For example:

  • Enhanced Boss Combat: Abigail could become stronger when Wendy faces bosses like Deerclops in winter or Bearger in autumn—unavoidable challenges that would benefit from their combined strength—rather than being primarily effective against smaller foes like spiders, hounds, and bees.

  • Synergistic Abilities: Wendy could have skills that allow her to actively support and fight alongside Abigail. The Shroud ability is a good start, but it would be wonderful if their cooperation in combat could be further enhanced, showcasing how they support each other.

Additional Thoughts

One reason I feel so desperate is that I am very afraid and fearful that once the beta release goes live, I won't have a chance to remake it until years later when Klei revisits all characters for the third time. You see, the first time is the original, then a remake, and years later in a quality of life update, they start to rebalance characters again. I feel like it is better to express these ideas before it is too late.

These are just my thoughts as a passionate Wendy main who wants to see my favorite character shine even more. I appreciate the hard work that the developers have put into the game and hope that my feedback can contribute to making Don't Starve Together even better.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Have a good day! :wilson_love:
