Hello. My name is Lúthien. I am a professional illustrator.

I was encouraged by folks on reddit to share my Don't Starve oriented work and journals over on these forums. So, here you go. I will pop in and add stuff as I make it. I'm tinkering away at a few things currently.

A Love Letter to Don't Starve

Some of my personal journal pages, breaking down my feelings about the art direction behind Don't Starve, and how the game's unique style influenced my work. The first page features a spread of official Klei game art for deconstruction and context. The second features my own characters and art within the lens of the game's style.

OC doodles:

I used these for the above journal pages, but here they are in full. I like to put my characters, Jack (Wocky, the green guy) and Merlin (Wicknott, the short guy), in the world of don't starve. Merlin is chaotic and would have a great time. Jack would accidentally die picking roses.

Your "Love Letter to Don't Starve" is a wonderful way to share your artistic journey and how the game's unique style has influenced your work. It's clear that you've put a lot of thought into deconstructing the art direction, and it's exciting to see how it inspires your own creations. Keep tinkering and sharing—your passion shines through!

Quick little update on the don't starve inspired animation I'm working on with my partner. I am scoring and illustrating it, whereas he is compiling and animating it in blender with my direction. Its been an incredible project to work on him with, as it's our first proper colab.

In any case, we've made really good progress on it, I'm so proud of how it's looking!

I decided Wocky's tail needed to be changed for readability- it felt too short and clunky before. His arms also got a rework to better fit the sort of "dainty" posture he'd run with. Wicknott's puppet and animation are more or less complete, it just needs some minor tweaks. Elderflower (the giant guy with the crown) is coming along so well, his animation looks absolutely spectacular. We had to play around with colour and shadow to create a distinct separation between him and the foreground, as to reduce visual noise and improve scene readability as there's a lot moving and going on. We also discovered, via the guidance of a friend, that adding slight motion blur to him REALLY helps reduce any muddy visual noise caused by his movements in the scene.

The animation of wick and wock is also stepped! This means that it has a distinct "stop motion" feel to it that adds so much charm. Stop motion is one of my biggest inspirations and it's really fun transferring that inspiration in such a direct way. Anyway, thats my ramble for today. I'll post the animation here in full once it is complete. We still need to add the frame, music, and complete idle animations for Elderflower that will slot between his large movements. Stay tuned!
