Raven1934
Hello, I'm a longtime player of dst on dedicated servers and have been dancing around same issue since the launch. I feel there should be a more reasonable way to update the servers than just basically toppling a player filled server and resetting their progress. I feel it creates a lot of unnecessary frustration on players (I know it does on me atleast), when unannounced and suddenly server just crashes and burns and after few minutes of wait the server queue shows it has reset to day 1... I think it shouldn't be too complicated feature to implement a reset function that kicks in once the players have left the server, I know this creates some version mismatches, but players could perhaps then be allowed to also download to older version or opt out of update while its in development. One nice feature that could be added to the server queue is showing the version number the build on the particular servers is running, many times the game updates days or even weeks before the dedicated servers do, so maybe manual update delaying or allowing past version downloads and showing also which build to load would mitigate this issue. (Yesterday the hound huggles crashed at roughly +2 gmt at 16:00 or so, still uncertain if the game got updated or the server just crashed otherwise, but I've heard from other players servers just shut themselves down if the game updates even if filled with players as yesterday.) Daniel86268
I assume you are talking about Klei's public servers, since I've never experienced anything like that on my self hosted servers. DST Servers generally are incredibly stable. I don't remember a single crash that wasn't mod related. Additionally even super old maps not only stay usable, but also get the new stuff retroactively fitted into the old map, allowing players to keep their old maps, and also enjoy the new content. (For example the moon island and the lunar grotto.) I wouldn't expect Klei's public servers to be much different. During updates I think Klei just automatically shuts them down to update them for everyone. If they'd keep them running till everyone leaves, I can guarantee that there'll be some people just staying online and clogging the servers on the old version without anyone else ever getting back on them. So it's kinda a tricky situation. In general Klei's public servers are also more or less servers where you should expect to see them reset quite frequently or raided by other players. If you want to play consistently, you'd be better off either hosting your own dedicated server for you and your friends, or joining a community with one more more moderated dedicated servers to play on.
