About round trip mining rockets

Recommended Posts

Hello dupes and dupettes, I'm currently trying to build a VERY spaced out colony. I don't have many water sources, but I have some very interesting POIs around the planetoids. I've concluded that the most sensible, and most fun way to sustainably inhabit these planetoids is to use A LOT of mining rockets set to round trip.

I've never used round trip, I've always manually controlled them. I remember some old patch note claiming that mining rockets on round trip would finish mining and then come back, but I also remember that it was bugged. So yeah, it's been a long time.

I've done some research, but found no conclusive and reliable info. So, before I waste some hours in sandbox, I must ask some questions to those who tried round trip mining rockets:

Do they actually come back?

Is there still a "primary loot" on POIs?

Do they stop mining and come back as soon as one of the storages is full, or do they ignore the secondary loot and keep going until the primary loot is exhausted or has no storage space available?

Do you have to designate the storages before take off or will they dump resources in any appropriate cargo module available?

Do they ignore storage limit set in appropriate containers? (I hope so)

And last but not least, if a POI is depleted but there's still storage space and diamond available, will the rocket come back or will it just stay there wasting diamond?

Thx, and cya!

1. Yes! they do come back. Drillcone rockets will arrive at the POI, mine until they have no diamond left, and then come back.

2. I'm not sure what you're referring to with Primary loot. Each POI has a selection of percentages of material and one singular Mass that will deplete as the drillcone mines, I don't think there is any hierarchy in this sense. That being said, Yes, if there is no storage available for X element of material, be it because the storage is full or because no storage existed in the first place, the drillcone will continue to mine at the same rate, but only adding material to the storages that are available, effectively "throwing away" the rest. You can come to a Radioactive Gas Cloud with only a solid cargo bay, and the rocket will simply only come back with the solid uranium and nothing else, however with the POI itself depleted just as much as if you did collect everything.

3. you don't have to mark anything on the modules, they'll just dump it in there anyway.

The rest... I do not believe i have answers for X_X

This is to the best of my knowledge:

There is no primary loot. The loot comes out in the percentages shown in the POI info card. If you lack a type of storage (for example gas storage) that material is lost.

The rocket comes back if either the storage is full, or diamond runs out, whichever comes first. Typically it's the diamond

I believe the rocket also returns when the POI is depleted, although that doesn't happen so quickly. The mass regenerates with time.

Finally, if you select return trip on the rocket, and provide a green signal to the launch logic port of the rocket platform (tungsten wire recommended) the rocket will auto-launch once loot is unloaded and the rocket is refilled.
