goetzjam
I think we desperately need the ability to create refined carbon from wood in the DLC (could just allow this for the base game as well) I believe there is a mod for it, but i'd like to see it work the same as putting coal in. GluttonyMain
I think you are supposed to go to another planet for coal.Similarly how in normal game you are supposed to go to another planet for reed fiber. Works if you have the teleporter and the other asteroid is one with hatches? But the issue becomes if that isn't the case you have no way to get carbon for steel and no way to build an AT to keep your base cool. You don't need reed fiber for anything, you absolutely need an AT for temp regulation. It also gives more use for wood, maybe it needs a special machine to turn the wood into coal by burning it a bit first instead? If this is the case and we aren't going to be able to get the tools to keep the base cold until way later, you are better off abandoning the starting base as soon as you can move all starting dupes over to the second planet, build up production and research there and then move back. I'm not really sure that is the intention or should be the intention here. Its been 100 cycles in my test game so far and im seeing a heat issue slowly creeping up. I can probably offset it by setting up hydrogen gas loops or a liquid loop. imazined
Second this. Let wood melt to coal or refined carbon. There are a few coal tiles in sporechid pockets but an alternative route for coal is long overdue. goetzjam
I guess an option I have is create a "hot box" where i put a few thermal regulators and that could offset my issues. imazined
Also in base game the issue is much more extreme. You need steel for space and usually a lot of it. This is something that needs a solution. goetzjam
I haven't tried it on the base game layout to see, but if it doesn't contain some temperate zones then yeah its even worst then I thought. imazined
I had a look in debug on the base game map and it's probably the hardest base game asteroid so far. No sandstone biome, no marsh biome, no dreckos. imazined
And in the DLC there is this issue with the tp asteroid. Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/157540-refined-carbon-from-wood/#findComment-1729418 Share on other sites

I played the beta on base game (no SO), and had to loot the Jorge/shipping crate POI for any refined carbon. Even if Ceres doesn't have any coal in SO, it should in the base game. 11 hours ago, imazined said: I had a look in debug on the base game map and it's probably the hardest base game asteroid so far. No sandstone biome, no marsh biome, no dreckos. It wasn't that bad (the wood made it easy), I actually turned down drecklet eggs twice because I didn't want it to be too easy. I believe the bammoths give reed fiber, so that wouldn't have been an issue. The coal was the killer thing. Refined carbon being dropped by the wood stove after every use would not be a bad thing, like a wood-fired kiln. (obviously, only 10% or so of the original mass). Or, it could require cleaning every so often, and when cleaned, the dupe would scrape out refined carbon. 2tallyGr8
That hatch would have to live at very cold temperatures, unless it becomes the first hatch to take a drink. goetzjam
Was thinking about this some more, having poor access to coal also means making ceramic is just as difficult, which is the best solution to control heat\cool leaks. So a way to take lumber into coal would be ideal, rather then just allowing lumber to make refined carbon. Or allow ceramic to be made with refined carbon. Blu_Ni
I can see the Kiln getting a new crafting recipe: 125 kg wood -> 100 kg refined carbon. larsonco
This is a good idea. Could be coal or refined carbon. Besides generally making the planet playable for non-spaced out, more ways to do stuff is good. There is already a lot of ranching on the new planet, so requiring hatch ranching too is a bit over the top, imo Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/157540-refined-carbon-from-wood/#findComment-1730024 Share on other sites

Charcoal is indeed produced in a kiln. A kiln recipe would be perfect.
