Feedback on Wurt's skilltree

Recommended Posts

I don't have a systematized opinion on Wurt's skilltree, but I want to share some of my feelings after surviving for a whole year with it. Throughout a year i felt like the King's hunger skills and the King's quest skills are the most impactful and noticable. Naturally, the Amphibian skilltree felt very helpfull in Spring. Other that that her skills felt rather underwhelming. During seasons other than Spring i don't bother watering myself because i feel like i have to go out of my way too much to get myself wet as for the effects it provides, the same goes with mosquito ponds - too much effort for what it gives. I didn't like the new structures because the thing is that merms are already very good at what they can do and it's allways simpler to solve all problems by throwing more merms at it.

So what i would like to see to make those skills feel better is:

First - there is a lot of stuff in the game to prevent wetness, but isn't much to keep yourself wet, so i would like to have more of that as Wurt someting like the ability to water yourself with Watering Can or obtain wetness directly from natural water sources such as ponds. I think obtaining wetness whould be rather easy because wetness decay is a major factor.

Second - merms are already good at what they can do, so it would be better to make them more flexible and capable of performing other tasks, rather than doubling down on what they already good at.

Third - i like the idea of swamp being Wurt's natural habitant, but i can't understand why mosquitoes got more attention than frogs, since frogs can spawn in swamp and are creatures deeply related to water as well. Other than that, It would also be lovely to enhance that bond to swamp and wetness with somehing like an ability to catch fish with bare hands from ponds, it would be pretty nice and strong early-mid game ability before she gets to large merm cities and easier farms of fish. Catching fish from a pond with bare hands could also serve a tool to get wetness for Wurt specifically.

Adding the benefits for being wet made me find more use with the fashion melon, ice cube, and water balloons (can finally take advantage of that Banandana skin). I can usually keep my wetness capped at 79-89 with just a fashion melon and water balloons/walking the plank if near a boat, as long as I am not standing too close to heat sources (water balloons would build up over time since merms would occasionally kill mosquitos, but you can just catch them and make them into a portable water source with itchcraft II). Using a watering can to water yourself is still a cool idea though.

With how much stronger merms are I feel like I will use less of them in my arm, which will make maintaining them a lot easier instead of treating them as expendable, especially when taking advantage of shadow mudbringer.

Idk, i just slap a merm guard hut with a wall on a pond with mosquitoes but then forget to check back. I figured that in order to make the most out of mosquito ponds you have to base near to keep them constantly loaded. And also, what is that interaction you are talking about catching mosquitoes with Itchcraft II? I don't know about expandability, when i happen to stay at base with nothing to do i just keep grinding my merm guards into fish to feed the king for seeds and kelp with other stuff.

This assumes your farming as Wurt though.

Is this with the consideration that Wurt can directly pick up mosquitos now so long as she's carrying little itchy?

Mine was the opposite experience the only time I've seen a Wurt farm was when they didn't know what to do or they were just hanging around base and even then they'd just talk to plants at most while other people did the actual farming.

From what I've seen and from my personal experience with the character a lot of Wurts tend to avoid farming because it's time consuming and doesn't tend to keep them fed unless they commit.

i recall more vocal Wurt players went crazyyyy when reap what you sow happened, because playing wurt before that was unanimously miserable. lol, i don't miss egg strats at all. But either way, you could think of the watermelon hat mention here as drive/reason for you to start farming, right?

I was a day one Wurt player and was around during reap what you sow and I saw the community in general rejoicing because of the improved farming system not just one specific type of player that being said there were Wurt players who didn't like the change as well since some would just drop the spare seeds they got from the king into farm plots they setup as they were grinding guards which is something the change killed.

That being said it seemed to me the Warly community was the most vocal.

I mean some might but I think I'd just stick with the ice cube and water balloons. Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to say farming is bad I mainly just don't do it myself because it feels like the payoff is lacking for Wurt considering how much time goes into it and how much other things she could be doing in that timeframe. I really want Klei to rebalance crops and the crockpot to give some more incentives to farming for her in general though as I feel like the only reason to to do it for Wurt is access to healing food which banana trees already take care of and bloodshot even more so. Some people have already come up with some ideas to help them stand out as well with popcorn and pumpkin cookies giving you multiples when cooking.

The recent hotfix on Friday made it so that if you have Lil Itchy in your inventory and have the perk Itchcraft II you can catch mosquitos with your hands, which makes killing them a lot quicker and less bug net usage if you really you wanted to use skeeter bombs, I guess.

Wow, thats neat. But i see the Lil Itchy catching thing is in the descriprion of Itchcraft III, don't know if it works with Itchcraft II
