Some Ocean art needs improvement

Recommended Posts

Now KLEI is working hard to improve the game content, and I hope they don't fall behind in terms of art.

  • Adding details to various Ocean turfs, they are now too monotonous

Compared to SW ocean, DST ocean not only lacks content, but also ocean art. In SW, there is a clear transition between three different depths of ocean turfs, gradually changing from clear and clear texture in shallow waters to dull and blurry texture in deep waters, making players feel like they are sailing on the sea. Ship Graveyards also focus on refining the texture, enhancing the gloomy atmosphere

But DST? The three types of ocean turfs have almost no difference in color and ripple, and the "Hazardous Ocean" (corresponding to ship graveyards) only becomes darker in color,  appearing to be at different time periods, with no depth reflected at all.

Except for general oceans, DST special oceans areas also have no distinctive features. Compared to Coral Reef and Mangrove in SW, their exquisite and delicate turfs makes the entire biome look more colorful. Although there is no real content, it greatly deepens the player's impression of this place. Looking at Brine Shoals and Waterlogged, they don't even have their own turf. In fact, the content here is not less than Coral Reef and Mangrove, but unfortunately, the rough use of shallow ocean turf weakens their immersion. Note that my intention is not to make the DST ocean as bright as SW tropical ocean, bbut it should not be so sloppy either.

Especially in a place full of life, such as Waterlogged, the underwater here should be filled with small branches, leaves, and algae. In the promotional painting, it already has a unique color. It would be great if it could be changed to this way.

  • Ocean fish still retain their colors in the water, only making them a bit hazy

In the last live broadcast by KLEI, there was a circle of kelp around the otter nest in the water. Unlike before, its underwater part was not shadow but the kelp itself. I really like its appearance! It makes the hierarchy of the ocean and objects in the sea clearer. This reminds me of those ocean fish, which could have been used as embellishments in the hollow ocean, but their colors and lines were abandoned in the water, leaving only a shadow, like the scene seen wearing a mole hat, very uncomfortable. I hope the characteristics of these ocean fish can be preserved, and the same goes for squid.

Such colorful fish! It's a pity to abandon them

True. Any improvements to the ocean is a plus for me. But please can we just get a normal raft? Like I would literally take a normal log raft from shipwrecked and a thatch sail. Is it just stubbornness or is there some sort of license issue? Why are they so adamant on making us sail on those god-awful doughnuts lol.

I feel the like the giant cookie boats would be somewhat passable if collision for buildings were turn off on them.

Yes! Trying to raise or lower anker is terrible. (Mainly console player).

I am on board with you, boats in DST are bad from day 1 to 10.000, most people like to build on that, but don't like to sail on that. We need better ships, they don't need to be equal do those from SW, but could be a lot better.

That is why I want both! I like them for early game mobile bases, or just basing but like you said, terrible for sailing. I'm willing to meet in the middle. I just want something I can hop on quick and go.

This why need inflatable rafts Portable_Raft.png

yeah i honesty cannot see WHY we cannot have both SW and ROT boats

because they wouldn't work with everything else, you wouldn't be able to ram into sea stacks, sea weeds wouldn't realistically be able to make you drown, gnarwails' attacks wouldn't work well, sharks just can't attack you on water, CK can only freeze things without a boat and avoiding freeze would be extremely easy etc.

Just now, Anis5240 said:

who even the hell want to happily ram into those stupid ass stacks????

the point was that you wouldn't have a reason to try to avoid them either

Just now, SSneaky said:

then rework stuff a little

that'd require reworking it a lot and it'd be really lame because boats would just turn into walking with acceleration

1 minute ago, SSneaky said:

also sharks do have a melee attack that they do exclusively in water

if you mean them jumping out of water to bite, iirc that doesn't deal damage and they only use that for eating

Just now, grm9 said:

a reason to try to avoid them either

Oh man, the stacks being such a hindrance to the round plank ass "boat" to sail around is already more than enough reason. Especially when you suddenly get a sunken treasure within the area. Not everyone is going to bring along a pickaxe when sailing.

2 minutes ago, SSneaky said:

that still isn't similar in comparison to what they do on boats so they'd just turn into another simple enemy

2 minutes ago, Anis5240 said:

then just do it/get bumpers or boat patches?

what even is a hindrance supposed to mean? should hunger also get removed because it's a hindrance?

1 minute ago, grm9 said:

a hindrance

one that intentionally does nothing other than being stupid obstacles.

2 minutes ago, grm9 said:

should hunger also get removed

Well, you said that. I don't. And besides, the old DS doesn't have the hunger mechanic anyway.

1 minute ago, Anis5240 said:

that was an example for why you should either not use something being a hindrance as an argument to remove something or define hindrance and say why it's bad or just say why it's bad without mentioning hindrance

2 minutes ago, Anis5240 said:

what even is this relevant for

2 minutes ago, Anis5240 said:

should all games with any transport stop existing because most of the gameplay is about avoiding obstacles?

Just now, SSneaky said:

now is that really that bad of a thing

yes

why sea stacks existing

Again, because it has no other purpose than being a hindrance to sailing. Sure, you can make your own Sea Weeds area too, but why bother? The ocean-related food aren't always worth the work.

hunger is a hindrance with that logic, should it get removed too?

it would make sea stacks something useful.

Yes, your ideas seem cool. But I guess it would be weird as hell to transport such a huge, tall rock onto a boat without making the boat collapse lol

Right now the sea stacks are such an eyesore.

so what's the point of your replies

????? You'd started this whole argument first???? I merely said at first, "who even the hell want to happily ram into those sea stacks?" Then you coming along without any real reason to argue.

Is this all you do every day? Out of mere spite? No wonder people find you such a bore.

Again, if you have nothing productive to give/suggest then why bother with this thread at all????

Just now, Anis5240 said:

you asked why would anyone want that to stay, i've answered

why do you keep saying that in every thread if you usually keep replying without a point

We need iron boats =D

:wilson_cool:

I will say, a new type of boat (not just another wooden round plank that got dubbed a "boat") will be nice to have. The bumpers barely do anything to protect the boat and it cost a ton to even make them, especially the shell bumpers.

2 minutes ago, grm9 said:

Because of you, why else? I'm so bored of seeing you anywhere, without giving actual good reasonings/ideas/etc.

If you wanna join in a conversation, at least act like it???? Not just rebuking every argument???? It's just a discussion, anyway?????

Does everything have to be in your favor???? Like you crying over the current Crab King will be gone forever????

Boo hoo.
